I am new to this forum, so I probably missed it, but what ships would we (as ship modelers) like to see? I personally would like to see some manner of a PHM-1 Pegasus kit(I know about that little 700th blob, but I think a 1/350th resin kit would be rather neat, the bigger the better. What about it? Anyone want a 350th Nimitz? How about a 350th Ark Royal? Thanks in advance!!! p.s. I really enjoy this forum, but please, no more knot questions!! ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Felix Bustelo Subject: Airfix Lobbying Hi folks. Keith and I discussed starting a mail campaign to convince Airfix to not only re-issue some of their "classic" kits, but also to take a shot a issue a brand new 1/600 ship kit. This morning I mailed my letter to Airfix. I agree with Joe & Dave that this may be an uphill battle (that still may be too optimistic!), but if we write letters or somehow send a petition of SMMLers and other ship modelers that may not be hooked up to the Net, it may show that there is a viable market for such an offering. Ok, let's pick a subject. While I would prefer a WW2 warship or a liner, I game for the HMS Invincible. We may be tilting at windmills, but I am ready to be a Don Quixote! So, count me in on a petition! Overpriced in my humble opinion. I have one reference which shows an overhead view of Mogami circa April 1943 and the flight deck is substantially different than that provided in the kit (but not so different that the Tamiya deck could not be easily modified to match). Is the kit supposed to represent some later retrofit or is it possibly inaccurate? Best regards, Tom Kremer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Tim Stoneman Royal Navy Escort Carriers "Aircraft Carriers of the World" by Roger Chesneau has a photo on p121 of a CVE (Combustible, Vulnerable, Expendable) in camouflage, with "03" on the bow, with a deckload of Corsairs; the caption says this is HMS TROUNCER. "Aircraft Carriers of the Royal and Commonwealth Navies" by David Hobbs has a photo on p186/187 also claiming to be TROUNCER - but there are subtle differences in details (as well as a different camouflage scheme, but RN camouflage changes were legion!). For example, the walkway outside the island is missing, yards on the topmast differ, there is no HF/DF mast forward and no pennant number. Given that TROUNCER's pennant number was D85, but RANEE's was D03 (and she had HF/DF), is the Chesneau picture (credited to "US National Archives") miscaptioned - ie it is actually a photo of RANEE? TimS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Max Loosli Subject: RE: that ship kit >> Evert - sorry, I don't have a website yet to post photos on. That sure would have made all this easier, wouldn't it? << Ken, There's always the ALT.BINARIES.MODELS.SCALE newsgroup if you need somewhere to post pictures (I think that's what it's meant to be there for, although you can never tell !). This assumes your ISP gives you access of course, and you can afford the line time to post them, and you've got pictures, and you want this thread to continue (although I like the idea of 'spot the kit/ship/what ever') ............ ! Best regards, Max ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: prmitch@ix.netcom.com Subject: Titanic Model - FSM article The September issue of Fine Scale Modeler has an article about the models used in the movie. Check it out. Paul R. Apparently she's for sale. So if you've got a spare $30 mill laying about, you could have the real thing, not just a model :) Paul R. Mitchell White Plains, NY mailto:prmitch@ix.netcom.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Michelle Roth" Subject: Petitioning Airfix for a new 1/600th ship or two...and a story >> Like Keith and David, I would dearly love to see Airfix take upon themselves the task of issuing new 1/600 warship kits. However, like <> names as possible on the petition to ask Airfix to produce the kit. Depending on the number of names we can muster, this might well carry some weight with the good folk at Airfix. << Hello Joe and all, I for one would lend my name to a petition for any new ship from Airfix.....the Falklands Commemorative Collection is a neat concept! Although my personal preference would be for WW2 or earlier, ANY new addition would be great! This reminds me of a brief story regarding the Airfix HMS Hood. About 5 years ago I was suddenly swept up with this ship modeling interest...( a diversion from my usual vice of model railroading ) and I had just built the 1/720th Hood by Italieri but really wanted to find an old model of the Airfix Hood. This was a nostalgic throw back to my youth when I was obsessed with the movie "Sink the Bismarck" and since this movie dates from 1959 or 60, the modeling choices were much more limited in those days. We lived in Canada and finding model ships was not as easy as today, and my father tried to find models of the Bismarck and Hood, but to no avail....So I settled for an old ITC Graf Spee to play the role of Bismarck and an old Revell King George V played herself and POW, with a Revell USS Iowa doing duty as the "good old Hood"....(an Aurora USS Saratoga, angle deck and all, was the Ark Royal...ahhhh, the innocence of youth!!) Anyway... I looked for an Airfix Hood, but at the time failed to find one anywhere. I new of the Tamiya Hood, but I wanted the Airfix version and had found that it was then currently out of production. This bothered me to think that a British model company would discontinue a model of a ship, that to me at least, epitomized all that was glorious and great about the Royal Navy, but two non British modelmakers, Tamiya and Italieri, should have a Hood in production, and not Airfix!! So I called Airfix on the telephone and politely told them that to me it was almost blasphemus to think that such was the case!!! They were somewhat surprised and amused that someone from "the colonies" :-))) (as I refered to myself ) should care enough to express this concern about the Hood. They said they would take my opinion into consideration. They STILL haven't re-released the "good old Hood"!!!! Now, I grant you that one little comment from one fellow searching for their Hood isn't going to do squat, but I sure felt better having expressed my $.02 worth and the person I talked to at Airfix actually agreed with me!!! Sign me up for that petition, Mr. Reyna!!!! Eric Roth, Minden, Ontario, CANADA.........( please pray for our flippin' LOONIE $) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: AllenFW2@aol.com Subject: Inputs for Airfix "New" 1/600 Ship: HMS RENOWN I concur with Joe Reyna's suggestion that the most successful approach of lobbying Airfix would be to concentrate on one 600 scale warship. Being a "big gun ship" guy, I prefer WW II and earlier era subjects. In my opinion, modern warships are a bit antiseptic and even boring...well, except for carriers (but I don't like building carriers). So, my choice is HMS Renown (now to figure out what era, WW I, 20's, 30's, WWII?). Of course an inexpensive SMS Baden/Bayern or an accurate DKM Admiral Hipper would be nice too. My first vote is for Renown! All in favor? Frank Allen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Donald Hinton" Subject: USS Yorktown CV5 Hello, Though this is more historical than modelling, I thought you would like to hear what to me was new news (if this was reported earlier while I was off the net during my recent move, then appologies to all): The US Navy, National Geographic Society, and Dr. Bob Ballard have located the USS Yorktown, sunk June 7, 1942, at 16,600 feet down, half way between Hawaii and Japan. The ship Laney Chouest Deep Submergence Support Vehicle used the Navy's Advanced Tethered Vehicle and personnel from the Deep Submergence Unit at Naval Station North Island, San Diego, to photograph the ship on the bottom. The ship is in "surprisingly good shape." A film crew from National Geographic and Dr. Ballard are producing a documentary to be aired in April 99. Hope he writes a book about her, as he has done for the other ships he's located. I got this info from the Navy magazine "All Hands" Aug 98 issue. Though I haven't visited the web site, the article gave the following URL: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/features/98/midway for pictures and info on the expedition. Cheers!
