Their Gearing and Sumner were almost perfect as far as design goes. With a little extra detailing they both build into really nice models. I have the FRAM Gearing kit built up and looks wonderful. If you can find one at a swap meet get while you can. It's the only truly accurate Sumner/Gearing hull out there. Does anyone know how these planes would have been painted at this time? There is a photo in Freidman's US Carriers and they look as if they would be olive green, but I'm not sure. Also, what kind of markings did these planes have? I'm really excited to be working with some other planes besides the standard naval aircraft (of which I've painted way too many of ) but unfortunately, know next to nothing about planes when it comes to things outside of naval aviation. Any help would really be appreciated! John Snyder Snyder & Short Enterprises The Paint Guys -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Robert Weilacher Subject: LST deck colors I have done some research into the color of landing ship colors in the South Pacific (USN, WWII). I have noted that small LCI, etc craft have the same camoflage colors on their decks as they do on vertical surfaces. By contrast, APD converted destroyers had the deck (lime) green 20-G color on the decks with vertical surfaces similar to the cammo on the LCI's. What deck color was used on LST's ? Rob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Chris Neel Subject: USS Lexington Painting Q's Hi all, I'm still working on that pre-war USS Lexington project and have a couple of more questions (been a very slow moving project).... I've decided on the 1937 configuration - prior to widening of the forward flight deck, to be carrying F3F's, SBC's and TBD's and maybe even some Vought Vindicators (all courtesy of WEM).... and to be painted in the US Navy pre-war colors.... I just received my copy of "The Lexington Class Carriers" by Robert C. Stern from the Naval Institue Press (very nice book - lots of detail photos great for modeling references...) and under the "Paint Scheme" chapter it states that the flight deck was "painted maroon with orange striping to facilitate aircraft operations"..... Can any of you Paint Guys elaborate on that? Would like a suggestion on some colors I could mix and something I could match that to..... Being a Texas Aggie, my idea of maroon is pretty fixed on a very deep and dark color..... The paints that are readily accessible around here (Victoria, TX) are pretty much limited to Testor Model Masters unless I make a 2 hour + road trip to Houston or Austin or somewhere... Mr. Stern's book also states that the extenal linoleum covered decks were left unpainted leaving a "generally brown color to show"..... would like some help with that one too..... Exactly what is linoleum and what external decks would be covered with it? What color "brown" would that be? Last question (for now) - The pre-war Lexingtons had these rather large deck edge netting/railing systems that folded up or down depending on the status of flight operations, does anyone know if any of photo-etch producers put out these items in 1/700 scale? I'm thinking that they would be difficult to scratch build from screen material or something...... Any suggestions would help.... Thanks!! cn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: JohnVCP@aol.com Subject: Re: 1:1200 vs 1:200 Scale Now that the scale questions is solved, what was the original post? No explanation for the removal was given. I would assume that there is some health risk involved. No other aerosal sprays were removed, just these. If you recently purchased either type of primer, you should probably not use it, just to be on the safe side. << John Snyder Snyder & Short Enterprises -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: steven lau Subject: Perry class frigates. I am working on the Skywave 1/700 OHP class frigate. My photos show the rigging (stay lines?) from the starboard side of the main mast running down and attaching to a beam which comes out of the side of the superstructure above the main deck. My problem is deciding where the port side lines attach. I can't tell if they connect to the boat platform or if there is another beam sticking out of the side of the ship like on the other side. Any ex USN frigate sailors out there who can provide the answer? Thanks.
