Do you happen to know if they included any British WW2 era subs? Case -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: tom dean Subject: Kit Collections Hi Gang: As a person who has never been able to have more than two kits in the house at any given time, there is one thing that bothers me about these massive collections some have amassed. Some of you have more kits in your house than some hobby stores I have been in. Doesn't it bother you at night when you try to sleep, and you realize these kits are calling you from your attic, bedroom closet, workroom or whatever position they take in the house? Do you lay awake, wide-eyed, starring at the ceiling and assemble parts over and over in your head? In a desperate attempt to go back to sleep, do you count kits jumping the workbench? If you didn't you will now. Damn I know I would. Tom Dean -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Kerry Jang Subject: Chinese Steam Navy Hi Everyone, I just received a copy of the new book, "The Chinese Steam Navy 1862 - 1945" by W.J. Wright. I got my copy from Barnes & Noble's website for about $40.00 US. Well, if there was ever a book to thrill me, here it is. It's a history book looking at the development of the "modern" Chinese navy starting with the early ships, a historical background (which I found reasonably well balanced, not full of the revisonist, jingoistic nonsense you often see in books about one country written by someone of another). The books talks about the navy proper, to the Chinese customs service. It's full of pictures (many seen before, but nice to have them all in one place), but I have some not in the book so the photographic coverage is not extensive as I had hoped. There are no plans per se, but rather a lot of sketch plans from old books. Here's a run down of hte chapters: Geographical & historical background The early ships Dockyards, defencs & colleges The Chinese built ships to 1877 Shipbuilding at home and abroad 1875-1885 The Sino-French war 1884-1885 Shipbuilding at home and abroad 1885-1894 The Sino-Japanese war 1894 The Seige of Wei-Hai-Wei The New ships, 1895-1909 The New Fleet program and the Revolution of 1911 The period of continuing unrest 1915-1928 The Nationalist governmner - a decade of conversion and shipbuilding The undeclared war The torpedo boats The Custom crusiers Appendix A Chinese Naval Guns Appendix B Names & Nomenclature Chronology 1861-1945 Bibliogrpahy Notes Index Catham Publishing ISBN 1 861176 1449 A neat chapter is one on the torpedo boats. With the info here, we can finally finish up those plans of the TING YUEN! Cheers, Kerry Jang aka Zheng wen-zhi -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Dizzydismal@cs.com Subject: Re: Civil War Navies TO: Bradford Chaucer I have a copy of the "Warships" book. Have not yet seen the Civil war Navy book, but assume from the title that it would cover more than just warships. The first book clearly covers just warships. I certainly hope to see additional photos and drawings. Dennis Disbrow -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: Gambier Bay decals Hi SMMLies, I'm looking for some decals to out fit my plans that come with the Blue Water Navy USS Gambier Bay CVE 73 kit. It did not have decals and Mike Bishop said it does not come with them. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanx, Keith -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: peter samolinski Subject: Re: Ring Main Turret top decals for ICM KONIG kit? Turret "Ring" Decals: if you contact ICM they will send you some; they sent me two sets, however they pretty well disintegrated with the application of the setting solution. Classic Warships has a very nice set of WWI German ship decals; their decals are excellent, although so trasnparent I had to paint over them. Pete -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: PT Dockyard Subject: Re: WW1 Subchaser Movie >> I noticed a trailer on Turner Classic Movies about a movie called "Thunder Afloat" which was made in 1939 ...... I will give a VCR alert when it is shown. There were some very good shots of the ships in the small segment I saw. << PLEASE DON'T FORGET! It sounds great. Other great old WW1 movies... "Hell Below" about US Subs in the Adriatic. Filmed on an old S-boat "Today We Live" which features a 40' CMB in several parts, showing the boat conducting 2 attacks. Dave Gregory -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: NEVENGER@aol.com Subject: Re: Ring Main Turret top decals for ICM KONIG kit? If for some reason you did not get the turrent decals for your Konig in the box try sending an e-mail to ICM about it. This happened to me and I contacted them on it. at there web site. The day after I sent them the e-mail on it they responded with appoligies and said they would send them to me right away (at no cost), which they did. Their e-mail addresses can be found on their web site at http://www.icm.com.ua/predstav_e.htm The main site is http://www.icm.com.ua -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: JOHNHWER@cs.com Subject: VCR Alert - Here Comes The Navy For those with Time Warner Cable, "Here Comes The Navy" will be on Turner Classics Movies at 5:00 AM on 21 March. This 1934 movie stars James Cagney, Pat O'Brien and Gloria Stewart (also seen in the last Titanic movie). The other star in the movie is the USS Arizona herself. Those who have the wonderful book BATTLESHIP ARIZONA, AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY by Paul Stillwell can find a full chapter dealing exclusively with the filming of this movie. From this write-up it appears that there is considerable historical footage of and on the Arizona in this movie which should be of great interest to many SMML's. As the book puts it, "It is now a rare window into the way the fleet operated in the mid-1930's". This movie was last shown on TCM in March of last year and was also alerted on SMML. Unfortunately my skills at that time at setting my new VCR timer were not up to par and I totally missed it while out of town. This time I plan to get up at 5:00 AM (Aghh!) and personally turn it on. Since it has not been released on videocassette, I'm not waiting another year for it to come around again! Don't sweat it. On a side note, I just got my April issue of FSM, your article on how to work PE is wonderful. I have seen PE seminars, but your explanation of tools, and how to bend PE is great. I am already digging out my own Fletcher kit, to see if I can pull some of your tricks and tips off. BTW, wait till you guys get a load of the guy in Milwaukee who uses a LASER RANGE FINDER on his airbrush. It's well wort the cost of the magazine!!!!!!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Infomation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Duane Fowler Subject: SMML Con 2001 USS Hornet Hello All, Friday night was the monthly meeting of the Hornet IPMS chapter. We meet in the Goat Locker and as can be expected, this chapter probably has the largest percentage of ship modelers of any IPMS chapter. Of course the hot topics at the meeting were the contest and show that the chapter is hosting and the SMML Conference. It's less than two months away now and things are really moving quite quickly for us. If you haven't already, please check the SMML web page for the schedule and registration form. If you are planning on coming, please contact Sami Arim to let him know so that we may better plan our resources.
