I would like to know where I can buy a photo-etched detail set for the Yamato battleship in 1/600 (or near) scale, but I have to buy from a company that will ship internationally and accept payment by credit card (I'm from Brazil). I would love to purchase from Gold Medal, but they don't accept credit cards, and I don't know another company that have a detail set for the Yamato. Thanks in advance. Eduardo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "James M. Powles" Subject: Revell's CSS Alabama I just brought Revell's kit of the CSS Alabama and would like to know if anyone else on the list has built this model since I have two questions on it. First, Revells' painting suggests do not appear to be completely correct according to some pictures I have seen of her and I would like to know what colors to use on the inside of her bulkwards, lifeboats and masts. And second, since the hull and deck are such large parts, I was wondering if I should prime them first and, if so, what type of paint. I plan on painting the model with water based paints. Thanks in advance. It appears to be a scaled up version of the old Revell kit so it will need detailing sets. Has a two piece hull for full and waterline. You get what you pay for but you do have the basis for a good Arizona. Smith's book "Cruisers in Action 1939-1945." There is also a nice plan of HMS Galatea in 1941 in Raven & Roberts' book "British Cruisers of World War Two." Surely there must be others, but I just can't find any. Hope this helps at least a little.... Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: Atlantic Star & red paint >> My other query relates to red paint. The Royal Navy since time immemorial has a traditional fondess for painting gun decks bright red. [Why??!!} << So blood from injuries and deaths doesn't show, which would de-moralise the suvivors. First Steve Wiper- I was thinking about doing just that (drawing on the original) but I am not a master draughtsman and if I did make any mistakes there is no going back and having another try. Photocopy, even lasercopy, leads to the further loss of detail and high resolution scan not only shows all the existing detail but by zooming in, the faint traces can also be examined and in case of blurred lines a reasonable mid-point found. Ron Hillsden, I do actually have AutoSketch v.5 but because it did not accept .tif or .jpg type files I thought it useless for my purposes. Now that you told me that it accepts .bmp files I will certainly have another go. Thanks. Timothy Dike -I also have IntelliCAD 2000 and TurboCAD 2D do you know anything about them by any chance?? Will they accept any of the file formats which standart scanner software uses (like .bmp)??? And last but certainly not least I would also like to thank Harold Stockton for his kind reply off-list. Warmest regards D.P -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Victor M. Baca" Subject: Re: Nautical Research Journal Kurt hit it squarely on the nailhead in his assessment of NRG. One of the coolest goodies you'll get with your membership is the Nautical Research Journal--a top-notch quarterly in Black & White with regular color covers coming soon. The Journal covers quite a bit of ship history, a lot of it with a naval flavor. The current issue, for instance, has a riveting article by Dana Wegner on building wood towing models at the U.S. Experimental Model Basin. The archival cover photo showing a craftsman sitting atop a huge milling machine, helm in hand (no kidding!) as a monster sized hunk of wooden ship model passes underneath, is worth the price of admission alone. If you're not a member of NRG yet--get cracking--you don't know what you're missing! Victor Baca Editor & Publisher MODEL SHIP JOURNAL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: BECJPARKER@aol.com Subject: SMML name change One other note on the meeting at the Nationals. The suggestion was made to change the name of the group to just Ship Modeling List "SML" since SMML is such a mouthful and smellies might make new folks shy away. Lets put this to a vote on the list right away. Put it out, give folks a week to vote and give a decision to yea or nay. Hi all, Firstly - S, Double-M, L rolls quite nicely off the tongue, so I don't think it is a mouthful. Secondly - SMMLie is only a nickname same as SMMLer there is nothing real official about it. I happen to like SMMLie & don't see any connotation between either nickname & any undesirable odours, they are both logical extensions of SMML. Thirdly - I don't see that the nickname SMMLie or SMMler would drive away any potential new member as new members are joining every day. Lastly but by no means least, any name change would have to be by an overwhelming majority (approx 1000 yes votes). As it would mean a change in domain name ($$$) & getting every website around to change the name & link - this basically means more work for me as owner/maintainer of the list. This would only be worthwhile if there was a clear majority vote across the SMML subscriber base. Regards, Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: ZMzimmerman@cs.com Subject: red gundecks I have drawn the impression that the gun decks have been painted red so as not to shown spilled blood. I must admit this conclusion is drawn more from Alexander Kent and CS Forester (Horatio Hornblower and Richard Bolitho) their heroes than anything official. I have been trying to do the camouflage as the Tirpitz was in March of 1944. Only problem is all the pictures show the starboard side of the ship (I have used several books but all still show only same side). What I want to know is if the ship had the same pattern on both sides. Next question is does anyone know how accurate the AJ Press pictures of camouflage is with the added green colors in the patterns? My other books seem to say little about the exact colors applied Also wondering about the mid July 1942 patterns. Where they also the same on both sides or a totally different pattern on each side at the same time. Some of the books I have and looked at are Anstriche und Tarnanstriche der deutschen Kreigsmarine / Benard & Graefe Verlag Battleships Axis and Neutral Battleships in WW2 / Garzke & Dulin Battleship Tirpitz /Gerhard Koop & Klaus-Peter Schmolke (this showed different March 1944 pattern on each side, but not in pictures). AJ Press 15 and 16. Plus the Timiya instructions (yea again the same side is only shown) Any help with this will be loved and yes you can e-mail me at Nevenger@aol.com Sincerely, Rich -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Cooper, Mike" Subject: Hood Dear all Just remembered - Channel 4 News (UK) have sponsored a team to go and look for Hood. Eric Groves is providing the historial advice. They did a quick visit to Bismarck last night, by way of calibrarting their equipment. Should be worth keeping tabs on. By the way, yonks back I noted that if painted as per the instructions Deplhis/Regia Marina Italian subs look like mint-choc-chip ice cream. I was advised by y'all "Yes Mike, that's prety much right - get the S&S sheet" I did, and did a Foca class minelayer yesterday. Well, she does look like mint choc chip ice cream! We already have a couple of possibilities for locale depending on how many people we can get together, but actual details still have time to be arranged. My hope is by announcing it now, perhaps some of the Washington State contingent will be able to make the trek northwards for the day. Regards, Bob Pearson Managing Editor / Internet Modeler http://www.internetmodeler.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: Next SMML-Con >> It was suggested we try to have a ship modeling tech session in conjunction with each future IPMS Nat's. It was then suggested we might better team up with a group with more emphasis on ships (which is entirely lacking with IPMS) At this point the Nautical Research Guild (NRG) was brought up as a logical group for us to consider as they meet annually usually in a port city or area and everybody attending is in some manner either a ship modeler or a researcher. There is no competition from airplane or armor modelers. << Yes, That would be a good venue. Perhaps we can get some sense of the members here and then approach NRG to see whether they would allow us to associate with their meeting. Washington would be a good area in light of the reopening (partial) of the Navy Yard Museum, and of course of the Smithsonian and Archives Perhaps as a side trip we could arrange some sort of tour/guide to the Nat Archives ship plan section and a talk on how to research ship plans. Also not to be missed, though not directly ship related is the Smithsonian's Garber facility. Though all aircraft, there are many naval subjects there and it's a great tour. On another subject, IPMS was great, and I got to meet up with many old friends from these hallowed halls, though regretfully I had to leave Friday night so I missed the Saturday get together. Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Vincent Mccullough" Subject: Re: IPMS SMML meeting Kurt van Damm wrote: >> It was suggested we try to have a ship modeling tech session in conjunction with each future IPMS Nat's. There is no competition from airplane or armor modelers. I know that many people have the impression that the NRG is against plastic modelers and non sailing ship modelers, but as a long time NRG member let me assure you that this is not a true picture of the NRG. I personally do not build sailing ship models. I build tugs, towboats and the like. I use a lot of plastic and have converted several other NRG modelers to using plastic as appropriate, something they never considered before. But, the point is the NRG accepts anybody interested in ship modeling, regardless of the type of ship and the materials. SMML member Don Preul is a speaker at this year's conf. and you can be sure he's not talking about wooden sailing ships! << I'd like to confirm Kurt's comments about the NRG. Contrary to what seems to be a popular opinion of the NRG, we embrace ALL types of ship modelers, whether they are interested in "age of sail" or "age of steel" modeling. NRG modelers work in wood, plastic, metal and paper, and are bound by their interests in ships, not sails. I'm pretty eclectic myself, working on both "age of sail" and "age of steel" models. If you received the our conference brochure (or view it on our web site), that's my 1:350 SS Jeremiah O'Brien that's pictured. The Guild conferences might, in fact, be a good venue for an "add-on" SMMLcon-style event. This year's conference (Washington DC) will already serve as the gathering point for another special interest group on modeling a particular "age of sail" vessel. Perhaps a similar arrangement would meet the group's needs. Keep in mind, however, that the schedule for this year's conference is already set and such a special interest group meeting might conflict with one of the tours that have been planned for the conference. So such a meeting would either have to occur in the evening, or the attendees would have to forgo one of the tours. We currently have conferences scheduled in Washington (2001), Philadelphia (2002), Chicago (2003), and Hampton Roads (2005). We hope to see many of you at one or more of the conferences. Vince McCullough Director, Nautical Research Guild -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "John Sutherland" Subject: FOTS SMMLcon Hi Shane, I intend to be there - Friday to Sunday anyway. Another item of query - someone (Caroline?) was going to post a list of accommodation places IIRC. Maybe we should try and coordinate this as well - then we can "stay up" as long as we wish and not have to worry about transport / drink-driving etc. This would need someone over there to be proactive to do this - volunteers? Another thought - what about a pre-FOTS group visit to WEM say on the Thursday? Just thoughts. Look out the UK - you are about to be invaded by down-under SMMLies! Hello out there.....I am in the kind of business that books events a full year in advance. Any of you out there just coming home from the Nats this year have CONFIRMED DATE FOR IPMS USA 2002 IN VIRGINIA BEACH. I have been told awhile back that it is not in July but the FIRST WEEKEND OF AUGUST, the 2,3,4th. The PR stuff must be out now for 2002....is it to be held at the Va. Beach Pavillion Center, the same place as the 1996 Nats. This is MUST BE THERE convention for me and and I dont want to schedule myself contractually for the wrong dates. August 4 & 5, 2001 is the WI Maritime Museums Annual Model Boat Show and Modeler's Symposium. The show/contest is Sat & Sun with registration being cut off at noon on Sat. The Modeler's Symposium is Sat from 1 PM till 4 PM and this year will feature carving techniques by Gordon Stiller, How to pick and use hardwoods for ship modeling by Rusty Dramm from the US Forestry Service and a talk by Bob Steinbrunn on how he built his award winning USS Kidd in 1/96 scale. The show/contest/symposium is sponsored by Ships In Scale Magazine. I can mail further information to any interested member of SMML. All SMML members and others will be welcomed. Manitowoc is about 50 miles north of Milwaukee. BTW, they have the USS Cobia a Gato class sub of the type built in Manitowoc during WWII tied up right at the Museum and have tours of the boat. Also, there will be a US Coast Guard ice breaker tied up there for the week end of the contest and it will be open for tours. Twice a day you can see the last coal fired steam ship on the Great Lakes the Badger a car ferry dock right across the river from the museum. On Sat., November 3, 2001 the three Chicago area scale model boat clubs will hold their annual Tri-Club meeting. This is an all day get together of the three clubs for a day of learning and sharing. We will have several speakers and some round table demonstrations. The program is not finalized yet but as soon as it is I will list it here. We provide morning rolls, coffee, etc., lunch and afternoon break for about $20 (that's to be set yet too). All SMML members will be welcomed. We hold this meeting at the regular meeting place of the North Shore Deadeyes just a bit east of the former Glenview Naval Air Base north of Chicago. The St. Louis radio control show and meet is September 15 & 16 in the downtown Union Station lake (this is the former train station that has been converted to shops and restaurants - the lake is in the are where trains used to pull into the station) It is a great show with friendly hosts. Their web site is: www.stlouisadmirals.com For long range planning the Nautical Research Guild's annual conference will be hosted here in Oct. of 2003. Great time to have a bunch of SMML modelers meet up with the NRG. These are the folks you want to know when it comes to researching ships.
