Isn't the Oliver Hazard Perry a fairly new ship?

Does anyone have any photos/drawings of the 3.7cm SKC30U gun they'd like to share, or know where I can get some good detailed info on. I have the left side and top views as found in "Anatomy of the Ship - Type VII U-boat", but need the right side for my project. Thanks.

I have seen both a Nichimo and a Nichimoco Kit in 1:200 scale for the Battleship Yamato. What are differences in kits as far as quality and availability of detail parts. I am also planning on making this model radio control. Do you have any advice on what motors to use or use the transmission that comes in the kits. Or would it be better to do a dual propeller and twin motors for the ship.

Any advice would certainly be helpful

Subject: Re: RN County DLG and its deck colors in the 70's and 80's

 Johnny Chen wrote re Counties.

Hull colours for the Counties in the 1970s & 1980s would be the same as current RN ships > Light Weatherwork Grey. They have used that since about 1969.

Decks would have been green 14C39 up to 1978 and Dark Admiralty Grey from then. Flight decks were always Dark Admiralty Grey.

That tan deck colour is called wood! They were the last destroyers to have part timber decks.

Re the colours, Chris Rogers posted a mix for the first two using Humbrol colours some time ago. Don't use Humbrol 88, it is wrong, too green, it is a darker colour. Dark Admiralty Grey is a Humbrol colour, though for some reason they made it gloss!

 Michael Brown

PS If you want to do them earlier, in the 1960s they were Light Admiralty Grey, a distinct pretty duck egg blue grey.

 Hi all,

I recently bought a Renwal catalogue from 1967. What a luck to find this in Germany, because this company was not very famous over here.

Can anybody tell me, when the company started and quit business? (End of production must have been in the early 70s). And where did their tools go to? They made some ship kits too, which never were found at other companies. I know that Revell got some of the model car kit tools.

 Any information would be appreciated.

>> It sounds like you may have the old Frog kit as she is a similar scale.

Being ex R.N. I always use Humbrol 127. I actually tried it on one of my old ships and it was very near the same shade.I think if you chose to use it you won't go far wrong. The decks would be green but I'm not sure what shade was used in the 1960s. <<

We have a Munsell match for that deck green, and hope to add it to our Colourcoats line of paints in the not-to-distant future.

>> 2. Deck colors: I notice that some parts on the deck are colored Deck Tan -- Am I right?
 2. Deck colors: I saw pictures that RN cruisers and DDGs were painted green. Is this true or just a lighting effect distortion? I know that they are currently painted bluish dark grey. If they were once green, when did RN shifted to the current scheme?

I can't answer the second part of the question, but perhaps Peter Hall will chime in, since he was there. As for that deck green, we have the Munsell match (see above). I don't believe that there was any Deck Tan used, but will defer to Peter for a certain answer.

>> Would appreciate your comments, recommendations, encouragement. <<

Encouragement? Go for it and have a good time. Recommendations? Well, it's like the acrylic vs. solvent-based paint question: there's no one right answer. Experiment with the various weathering media and find the one(s) that YOU like. Personally, I weather with pastel chalks and artist's oil colors. Why? I like the way they work for me (I was an art major), and I like the results I get. I don't tend to do washes, but know that lots of other modelers do, with great results. That's my tuppence-worth.

>> At the International Festival of the Sea at Portsmouth I was lucky enough to meet an ex-sailor who had been on HMS Khedive when she went to the far east towards the end of WW2 (February 1945). I had a nice chat and asked him what colour the flight-deck was. He replied that it was unpainted (or stained wood) ("just wood"). That's great for on escort carrier. Now the question is what colour is that ???? <<

If she had a wood flight deck, then she was one of the US-built CVEs. Their flight decks were Douglas fir, not too far off from pine in colour.

>> I am just about to start building the Airfix Admiral Graf Spee before she was painted in the camouflage for the South Atlantic.

The two books that I have ,"Monografie Morskie No. 8" and the "Vom Original zum Modell Deutschland Class" show different colours on her badge.

One shows the quarters being Grey and Yellow , while the other book shows it as blue and cream. The diamonds and cockerels on both badges are red. <<

I am not 100% positive on this, but I believe that the coat of arms were removed from all the German vessels once the war had started, so if you are doing a war time depiction of the Graf Spee, you wont need the color info.

Try finding the IPMS Argentina group on the web. There are a few avid modelers from that country that make it up to the States for the IPMS USA National Convention. Also, I believe that ship was of Italian design. Maybe you should search for some of our Italian friends to help you.

Subject: 1/1200 Nieuw Amsterdam

After 1,045 warship models in 1/1200 & 1/1250 scales, I'm a bit tired of warships. I'm now taking a shot at an ocean liner. My 1/1200 scratch built model of the Nieuw Amsterdam is in paint and coming along nicely. Fortunately, I had a wonderful set of plans from which to work, thanks to Mr. John Bowen's book "Miniature Merchant Ships". My problem is that I would like to build up a small collection of the so-called express liners from the twenties and thirties. I am therefore in need of a publication of some sort which will portray both top and side views of those ships, i.e. Rex, Bremen, Normandie, etc. Can anyone recommend a few
titles/authors, etc? Here in San Antonio, there is a wonderful book store which is willing to order in anything one could desire, with no insistence that you buy it after its arrival. I'm not too concerned about scale, as a bit of creative work with a Xerox machine will convert any illustration to my chosen scale.

 Can anyone help me???

Subject: NRG 2001 - One month and counting

The 28'th annual Nautical Research Guild conference will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel and Conference Center in Rockville, Maryland on October 5-7. Registration for the conference is moving into it's final month, but there is still plenty of room left for anyone who has not registered. The conference includes a tour of the US Naval Academy on Friday, 5 September, including a visit to the famous Rogers Collection of dockyard models. A Friday evening reception will give modelers a chance to meet and network. For those of you that haven't been to one of the conferences and are not members of a local club, this will be an opportunity to meet other modelers from all over North America and, perhaps a few from Europe and South America.

The Saturday technical sessions will include presentations on subjects from biremes to destroyers. These presentations will be given by:

David Blanchard, Nautical Research Journal editor,
 Joe McCleary, noted ship modeler,
John Broadwater, director of the Monitor preservation project,
Al Ross II, modeler and owner of Costal Forces Models,
Paula Johnson, Maritime Specialist for the National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution
 Don Preul, award winning modeler,
Commander Carlos del Toro, Captain, USS Bulkeley (DDG84)

Saturday will be capped by a banquet, complete with entertainment and a guest speaker.

The conference completes on Sunday with round table discussions and an opportunity to run R/C models in the conference pool.

The conference will also include a good selection of vendors, and a model show that will be open to the public. We anticipate a range of models, scales and media at the model show, including sail and steel navy, wood, plastic and card models. Conference attendees are invited to contribute their models to the show.

There are plenty of openings for all of the events listed above. In addition 4-5 openings remain for the pre-Conference Mid-Atlantic Maritime tour, which will visit David Tayor Model Basin, the Chesapeake Maritime Museum and Baltimore's inner harbor.

For more information and registration forms, visit the NRG home page at
 http://www.naut-res-guild.org/confer_files/confer-new.html

Or, if you have any questions, simply reply to this message.

We hope to see you at the conference!

I am pleased to offer Allan Parry's new translation of Kojinsha's "Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, Vol. 6--Shokaku class, Soryu, Hiryu, Unryu class, and Taiho" on my site at combinedfleet.com Having spent a little time with the manuscript myself, I can vouch that anyone with an interest in the Japanese Navy will find this a very useful addition to their library--this volume is chock full of very interesting details on these carriers. It can be found in my "Articles of Interest" section on my website, or it can be downloaded directly from this link:

I would say that my series of books, the Warship Pictorial Series by Classic Warships is just about one of the best sources for photos on the ships of the US Navy during WWII. My books have some of the best photo reproduction quality, most of the time better than many hard bound titles. They contain 50 to 125 photos per book and sometimes drawings. You will not be disappointed. They are also very reasonably priced. Please check them out on my web site @ www.classicwarships.com. Reviews of these can also be seen at the

Warship Pictorial #12 Benson/Gleaves Class Destroyers and #14 USS Wichita CA-45 are at the printers and the presses start rolling tomorrow. I just viewed what is called the "Blue Lines", which is the final proof prior to the actual printing.

Warship Pictorial #12 Benson/Gleaves Class Destroyers is 72 pages packed with 171 photos, an extensive set of drawings and numerous data tables. Lots of great camo photos from all the years during the Second World War, with many close up images. Price is $15.95.

Warship Pictorial #14 USS Wichita CA-45 is 56 pages packed with 90 photos, two sets of overall drawings, numerous weapons drawings, data tables, and an extensive history. A great pictorial history of this unique vessel. Price is $11.95.

Both books will be shipping to dealers and distributors by the first week of September.

Work is progressing well on WP #15 and #16. Number 15 is to be on the KM Schnellboote of the Second World War. I have just finished the artwork for eight color camouflage profile's, the cover art is ready, and have compiled a library of over 140 photos and counting. Number 16 is to be on the USS New Jersey BB-62. I am in the process of collecting photos, about 150+ and counting, and the acquisition of drawings as well. This book will cover the entire history of this ship. I hope to take both to the printer in December.
