I must admit, it's the best $44 I've ever spent on a computer game. While the close-range renderings of the surface vessels are rudimentary, and the camo is ALL wrong, it's pretty intense nonetheless, the graphics and the renderings are very good at range...since U-boats usually attacked at night, it sorta renders the point moot. The same company is also releasing Destroyer Commander in January, which, for the first time, will the 2 software packages to interact with each other... I recommend it... Models' Turbinia Although I am sure that Caroline, John and WEM in general carry only the best products, I strongly recommend you ask them to look inside the box and check the quality of the TC Models' 1:48 Turbinia before anyone orders it. A few years ago, I was sent a review copy of the kit. Although the overall kit design looked to be fairly accurate, the general execution left much to be desired. Among the problems: the castings were full of large bubbles - not just pinholes - that destroyed much of the detail; the hull was so badly hog-backed that it required sawing part way through both ends and inserting splines to straighten it out; the stanchions looked more like brass hairpins than deck hardware. The kit ended up, unfinished, in the garbage. Hopefully the company's quality control has improved since then, but caveat emptor. Sleep on, brave soldiers, in your places, row on row. The lark's still soaring in the sky. Still bravely singing, soaring high Away above the cannon's roar. Scarce heard amid the guns as yore. Before you slept in Flanders Fields. The faith with you we've kept and battled with the foe On crimson fields by you we've slept where poppies blow. The torch you flung to us we caught; With blistering hands we've bravely fought to hold it high To guard you thru the Night. And at the dawn to guide you to the light, when you awake from Flanders Field. Kevin W. I just picked up a new 1/700 th scale model of the Arizona from a Chinese company using the name "MiniHobbyModels". It is an injection molded kit. The hull is cast in two major pieces, from the waterline up and from the waterline down, allowing this kit to be built either as a waterline model or Full hull. Pins on the lower edge of the upper hull piece provide positive alignment with the lower hull. Not having appropriate references, I will leave comment on the underwater hull shape to someone better qualified. My "gut" reaction is that there are a couple of suspicious lines to that section of the hull. The upper hull is composed of two pieces, the hull and a section of deck on the bow from just in front of the forward 14 inch main turret. there is a raised section surrounding the main deck level which I believe is too thick to represent the waterways, but I believe that is what they are supposed to be. The portholes on the hull are raised dimples. The super structure is assembled in the same manner as the old Revell 1/429th scale model each layer is in two parts the lower side of the upper section being crenellated to form the upper three sides of the portholes. The model comes with three molded boarding ladders/companionways which seem out of scale. The Armor plating on the tops of the 14 inch turrets seems very heavy. the open 5 inch mounts seem good, but not as good as the skywave verions. The catapults and stern crane are nice, but I'm sure would be greatly improved by photoetch. The two kingfisher float planes are fairly good, but both have serious casting marks on the upper fuselage and greenhouse section about mid wing on the left side of the fuselage, though this could be just a problem with my kit. Overall for $9.98, it seems to be a good kit and a fair price. I would be interested in hearing from someone with better references as to how the kit scales out. Best wishes, Rich Sweeney Boston area, Massachusetts, USA. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "James Morley" Subject: 1/720 CV numbers One of the (many) problems in trying to build the Italieri 1/720 Carriers is that the Flight Deck Numbers (up to CVN 74 I think) are the old "solid white" type, and are of questionable size as well. Does anybody know where I might be able to get the more modern "outline" style numbers. At the moment my closest approximation might be 1/48 Luftwaffe fighter codes or possibly even 1/35 Wehrmacht tank codes. Regards -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Minadmiral@aol.com Subject: Re: Painting Photo-Etch Parts >> I agree with Rusty, I simply airbrush the entire PE sheet and have never had a problem. Usually there is a bit of touchup required after installation to cover areas where the part was cut from the sheet, but that's it. << Hi Bob; Then how do you remove the parts from the sheet without disturbing the paint?
