Trident SSBN >> I recently acquired two sub models, I think of OHIO-class SSBNs. They are hulls only with integral sail. They are about 32-1/2 inches long. I would like to know who kitted these things so I can acquire the necessary bits to complete them. If it weren't for those props, I'd just make up the details from scratch. << Hank- Are you certain these are Trident (Ohio) SSBN class hulls? Also are they styrene, vacuform, or resin? Tom's ModelWorks made two of the early Polaris SSBN subs (The Thomas Jefferson and the George Washington, IIRC) in resin about 2-3 years ago in 1:192 scale. These kits, though, sound a little short for this, as these scaled out to about 26-28 inches. There aren't a lot of details on an Ohio; sounds like you might need to build stern planes, fairwater planes and upper and lower rudders. The stern planes do have vertical endplates, and a towed array on the port side that deploys from a tube on the stern plane/vertical endplate. You could scratchbuild the 7 scimitar (crescent) - bladed propeller also. Tom Dougherty -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: raisingirl@mindspring.com Subject: Revell USS Hornet hello all.... Andy Jones asked: >> I was recently looking through the pages of ships on E-bay and I spotted a Revell USS Hornet kit. It represented the Hornet at the time of the Moon landings and the box art made a point of mentioning this. << Well...it's the same old Revell SCB-27A/125 kit in yet another boxing, but with a different set of aircraft. If I recall, this one comes with E-1Bs, S-2s and SH-3s, which makes it (in my mind, anyway) the most desirable of all. It also has the prettiest box art of any of them. It also comes with a tiny Apollo Command Module, sort of the same way the Wasp kit comes with the wee tiny Gemini spacecraft. The kit isn't THAT bad, but it needs a lot of fixing to make it accurate. The two biggest headaches with it are that the hull isn't wide enough and the superstructure is too tall -- you need to remove about 1/8" at its base. The electronics fit is the same as it's always been, which is to say it represents an Essex in the mid-1950s; you'd need the GMM set for the SPS-37A, SPS-10 and such, and you'd need to scratchbuild an SPS-30 and raid the spares box for a radome to fit aft of the island (I always used the forward ends of Monogram B-29 bombs for mine). The 5" and 3" guns are atrocious; throw 'em out and replace them with something else. (For the Hornet c. 1969, you'd only need four 5" mounts anyway, and you'd also need to remove the whole gun sponson on the fantail, as Hornet had hers removed at some point in the late '50s/early '60s, I think. I know she didn't have it in 1969.) I found one of these kits in a hobby shop about 15 years ago and botched it. I wish I could find another (or the Yorktown version that was sold at Patriots Point when I first visited there 20 years or so ago), but I ain't gonna pay what it brings on evilBay! :) jodie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Rod Dauteuil" Subject: Revell Germany USS Wasp I think it's a re-pop of the Italeri kit. I saw one a short while back and thought it was a reissue of Revell's own kit, but the pics on the side show a better looking model than Revell's. Rod -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Hughes Family" Subject: Re: Revell Germany USS Wasp Rusty, I am sure others will chime out here with a more detailed review but I just picked up the USS Wasp last night from my local hobby store and am planning on having a review to ModelWarship.com in a few days. In short - not bad on the detail for a Revell warship kit, airwing is small in number, out of scale and belongs in the garbage, EXCEPT that you do get 8 Harriers and they are just a tad smaller than the Dragon/DML offering, may be acceptable if used by themselves? - I have yet to measure them or the Dragon/DML offerings to see how out of scale either is. Flash is minimum, instructions look detailed and decals are not bad. Built out of the box it would be better than their 1/720 Tarawa kit but no where close to PitRoad/Skywave or Tamiya quality. Add some PE, WEM helo's and the such and I think it would make a great kit. I have seen some of your work and you will be able to make it a real beauty. For what it is worth I am not sorry I bought it. Keep checking ModelWarship.com for the full fledged review. Jeff Hughes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: WRPRESSINC@aol.com Subject: Re: Fox Photos I remember going through the Fox collection 25 years ago, but because I was looking for just a few specific things I did not bother to take notes generally, and I have since forgotten much of what I saw. There were some good things there though as I recall. I have an old friend in the UK who has several thousand wartime aerial vews of RN ships, most of these are not in any archive, and span from mid 1940 to very late 1944. If I can find his address in my files I will (if I can find the time) contact him. I seem to remember that some of these pictures were in colour. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: GKingzett@aol.com Subject: Re: Plans Derek Wakefield wrote: >> Must buy plans for Pittsburgh project. FDD has two sets: 1:96 and 1:192. My guess is the larger of the two is more detailed (common sense). Question: Is there really going to be all that great of an advantage of getting the larger set given I'm working in 1:481? << Your question is probably not about plans, but how much you care. If the originals are the same, which I suspect, then the difference is only in the reproduction. The larger scale will be clearer, less line bleed. From that you get to decide what you want to include in your model. If the originals are different, then you need to find out which are better. I believe their catalog has a code which indicates the source of the originals. If not, ask FDD. Ultimately, the final decisions are yours, what you want to include, what you want to omit. The more information you have, the more informed your decisions will be. There really is no stupid question when it comes down to it. Hey if you don't know then you just don't know and asking is the only way. I been building for 35 years and I learn something new all the time especially since I been on the SMML. If I had to pay for all the answers I received over the past two years on this list, man would I be broke. So just ask away and I'm sure one of us will help you. We all had our first day on the job at one time. Keith -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: Re: Revell USS Hornet Hi SMMLies, I had that Revell Hornet kit about 25 years ago. The one I think your talking about is just another re-release of the Essex class that has showed up in many different names. It was very much like the Wasp kit as they gave you a large number of Trackers and Tracer aircraft along with the space capsule and of course the decals for #12. The kit was fitted out for hornets ASW roll. I would like to know the impressions of those who have the kit. << Revell's LDH-1 WASP - get it, you won't be disappointed. This kit is one of the 22 new subjects reviewed in our latest issue - PSM-26 - which is mailing out now - the first copies went into the mail yesterday. To summerize very briefly - the ship model itself is very clean and well detailed - very comparable to the DML Tarawa class kits - but the airgroup is terrible! The Harriers are not bad - but the helicopters and Ospreys are crude and very noticeably underscale. The kit does not have a well deck, and the assualt craft included are RHIBs - totally imappropriate for this application. Replace the aircraft and add LCACs or LCMs and you will have a very nice model. For those wanting to add extra detail, I understand GMM has just relesed a PE set for this kit. Daniel Jones Plastic Ship Modeler magazine -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Devin J. Poore" Subject: Revell USS Yorktown kit Word is that the old Revell Midway Carrier kit (the one where you can build either of the 3 Yorktown class carriers) has slightly different parts in the box, namely the 20mm gun gallery decks and shielding. I have the standard USS Yorktown kit that is in current release. Does the GMM PE set for this model have those gallery decks in brass, or should I be looking for a Midway Carrier kit if I want to build the Yorktown in her WWII fit? It was the fact that I was charged immediately for the item even though it was out of stock. When I inquired to see when it would be shipped, I was told that it already had been, but that another would be sent. That didn't arrive either. I was told no problem, a third one would be sent. I got nothing again. I order regularly from businesses on the web, and have never had a delivery lost. Now I was supposed to believe that three shipments were lost? At this point, I said that I would contact the Attorney General's office. The book was shipped shortly thereafter. This is why I won't order from Naval Base again. Hi all, just got Artitec´s 1/350th scale Kortenaer-frigate in a trade. Now there´s my problem - I wanted the Karel Doorman... Anyways I´m just darn glad the guy I dealt with came thru´ with *ANYTHING* at all so sending this back is out of the question. Would someone be interested in trading this for an Artitec Karel Doorman or an Iron Shipwright HMCS Halifax? I understand that the latter is more expensive so we´d certainly could work something out in that case. Can anyone help me here?
