What are the origins of the nickname "Oz" for the country down under? << Joel In Australian slang (known as 'Strine' - because that's how visitors say we pronounce Australian) we call ourselves Aussies, which is pronounced Ozzies. We have this wonderful habit of shortening every word to it's simplest derivative, therefore, Australia (pronounced Oztrailya NOT Orstraileeah) becomes Oz. There was a very good book on this subject published a few years ago called "Lets Stalk Strine" (which means "Let's Talk Australian") - I forget the author but it was a hoot. Regards Mark Brayshaw -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Burl Burlingame Subject: Re: Dogs and Models Just a couple of weeks ago, our new half-boxer pup literally ate a helicopter model that was nearing completion. At least it had not been painted yet. She hasn't been near the models since, so it must not have agreed with her!
