The main piece of the museum is the decommissioned Redoutable, the first french SSBN which entered service in the sixties. The website below shows some pictures of the big sub. Note the nuclear reactor compartment (about 8m long) has been stripped off and replaced by a void section of the Turquoise, a cancelled attack sub. As the Turquoise section is somewhat smaller, an "outer skin" has been built to give the Redoutable her original external shape. Following the missile cruiser Colbert in Bordeaux, the Redoutable is the second "big ship" of the modern Marine Nationale to be opened permanently to the public. Others smaller naval vessels include the destroyer Maillé-Brézé in Nantes, as well as 50's vintage diesel attack subs and smaller boats. http://www.netmarine.net/bat/smarins/redoutab/citemerredoutable.htm Bruno Gire Bordeaux, France -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Rod Dauteuil Subject: Lindberg Bobtail Cruiser Hello, I have a model of the Bobtail Cruiser, which is the USS Carronade IFS-1. While I'm not selling it, I can tell you a little about it. It is an OK model, the usual Lindberg stuff. The superstructure is interesting the way it assembles, deck house sides, fronts, some sides have the floor molded into the part. They all stack on top of each other. The railings are cast as solid plastic. I seem to recall it's scale is 1/160, which is great for N scale parts and people. I'm using some 1/192 scale brass railings--I know, I know, it's not to scale. But the height of the brass railings matches the height of the cast-on railings. I think it will look OK. Then there's the 5" gun forward of the superstructure. It's OK, not very well detailed. There is a website for the sailors of the Carronade. I found it in a Yahoo search. If I think of it I'll paste the URL here in another message from my home PC. Regarding Lindberg ships, I'm anxious to get one of the Minesweepers from Naval Base Hobbies. Shaya, any idea when they'll be released? Rod -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: ALROSS2@aol.com Subject: Re: Old Lindberg Kit - "bobtail cruiser" >> especially the "bobtail cruiser", which was a landing craft configured for beach assault support (rockets and 5" gun). Does anybody have pictures or plans of the model? How about where I can find a model of it? << The ship in question was CARRONADE (IFS 1) which was built from the keel up as an inshore fire support vessel. Plans are available from the Floating Drydock (www.floatingdrydock.com). Once in a great while, a Lindberg kit of it will show up on eBay, which is where I got mine. The correct address is "navalismodels.com". Regards, Sami Arim -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: O'Connor Subject: Tony Ireland I agree with the writer who said there's a book in all those stories- I have been absolutely amazed at the stories and the details provided by Mr. Ireland. Please keep 'em coming, and please also consider a book- you are a natural storyteller-and history is the best story of all.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Rod Dauteuil" Subject: USS Carronade website Here's a link to the USS Carronade website: http://community-2.webtv.net/HUSKY5/USSCARRONADEIFS1/ also known as the "Bobtail Cruiser" Rod -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: Misc For you Aussies..On ABC tonite 9:30 I think is the series Battleships Also I am part of the my model club's PR team & thought I would pick your brains, seeing that many of you belong to model clubs etc .. Now we are planning on doing the standard advertising stuff with flyers to hobby shops etc, so would like to hear about other things you guys/girls do to advertise your club, like how many clubs use shirts etc wih their club names on it etc or other ideas that our group may not have thought of ..& of course any pitfalls that have happened at your clubs ..would hate to be hung up by the nearest yard arm by the naval modellers, put through the props by the aviation modellers , driven over by the armour modellers or blasted by the sci-fi modellers..... & who knows maybe other clubs might get some helpful tips tha they could use in their clubs .... thanks Andrew Jones (APMA) Sydney Oz -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Christopher Decker" Subject: Free and Discounted Shipping at Trident Hobbies All: Just wanted to share with the SMML list that Trident Hobbies is currently offering free shipping on all orders shipped to the continental United States and $6.00 off shipping to orders shipped outside of the United States.
