But seriously, where does the department of hiways and biways get all their holes for the pots? There MUST be a source out there even though the yellow pages does not list it under holes, gaps, voids or empty spaces. Malcolm N Waite ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Superb Destroyers >> Why do you call the IJN DD's "superb destroyers"? The Long Lance torpedoes were certainly superb weapons, but their use wasn't restricted to destroyers. And you speak of the "characters of the officers, and their training and doctrines" as though this increased their effectiveness. "Bushi, the way of the soldier" was the creed of the Japanese in the Pacific War. At http://www.marshallnet.com/~manor/ww2/atrocity.html it tells of many atrocities; e.g., "Jan 1942, Dutch naval POWs taken to the spot where their ship had fired on a Japanese destroyer, decapitated and thrown into the the sea." Did Bushi increase the IJN's effectiveness in defeating an enemy? << Folks, this is an international list. Let's not re-fight WW2 here. None of the participants was innocent of what we can term "atrocities", from the Italians in Ethiopia, the Germans at Malmedy, the Japanese as cited, the American Carlson's Raiders at Makin, and while I can't cite specifics, likely the British somewhere or other. It's history. And while we should not forget these things lest they happen again, they really (IMHO) aren't part of this list's discussions. Gernot was making a point about the IJN's destroyers as weapons systems, and they WERE superb. The training and tactics of their officers and crews--and I'm not referring to the Code of Bushido here--initially made them better than their Allied counterparts in the Pacific. These things, too, are part of history, the part that IS the subject of discussion on SMML. My uncle, serving in USS SELFRIDGE (DD-357) fought against the IJN's destroyers in the Solomons campaign until a Long Lance removed their bows at the Battle of Vella Lavella (which also saw USS CHEVALIER torpedoed and sunk). He had a great deal of respect for the IJN's destroyers and their night-fighting and torpedo abilities. Respectfully, John Snyder White Ensign Models http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/white.ensign.models/ Couldn't have put it better myself John. Yes, thank you for the detailed information on shells fired etc. Japanese modelers also note in their publications that many would prefer to backdate the ships to the Yalu river battle. And as you point out, a conversion set would be nice. And indeed, Seals Models will release a resin conversion kit to make Matsushima, and although I do not have details yet, it may be that conversion to the earlier period is included. From the tone of the publications I read, conversion of either Itsukushima or Hashidate should be a minor task. If you do not have access to any japanese sources because of language barrier, that is too bad, but there are still a huge number of sources that if read in an unbiased manner should enable you make the observation that the IJN destroyers were rather damned good. >> And you speak of the "characters of the officers, and their training and doctrines" as though this increased their effectiveness. Did Bushi increase the IJN's effectiveness in defeating an enemy? << Again, please stick to the point and do not generalize. Bushido is quite different from the concept that you seem to have in mind. I will not even attempt to go into details on this list. As for the officers, as you would know after just a little informed reading, the japanese navy had a doctrine of night surface actions, and the destroyer captions were expected to perform the exceptional tasks demanded of them. Which they did, as was duly proven throughout the war (Guadalcanal battles, Philippines to name a few for which extensive easily accessible allied records and personal accounts also exist), as well as in tasks for which they were not suitable (transport missions). Although certainly relevant and important, in a different context, as are allied atrocities, you do the brave and honourable former IJN officers and men a disservice with your posting. Their story and that of their ships is worthy of a few more great books, such as what Chris Langtree has in mind. I hope this ends the near-trolling and gets the thread back on track. I bought it some time ago, and also bought PE to detail it. In examining the kit, the wood planking seems way out of scale- way too wide. Any opinions about this, and any suggestions about how to fix it (other than buying the Tamiya kit!!) Ted Tsaltas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Danjessar@aol.com Subject: USS Raleigh LPD-1 I recently purchased the JAG Collective kit of the USS Raleigh, LPD-1. The kit comes with several 6X6 trucks and AAVs, which the instructions state can be placed anywhere. I'm wondering if anyone knows of photos of this ship - or her sister, the Vancouver - that shows a 'typical' configuration of the trucks and AAVs? Would these be on deck only when the ship is docked, or would they also be on deck when the ship is at sea? Also, I'd like to complement and thank JAG for their customer service. My kit arrived with a mangled gun tub on the hull casting. After e-mailing JAG about the problem, I received a new hull casting in less than a week.
