As a Canadian teenager. my room rivaled Boeing or Kaiser in its production of models. Okay that's a little exaggeration; as well, the amateurish quality of construction matched the youth who built them. Still, they were a source of pride and accomplishment. But in my twenties, as marriage approached, it became apparent that my sizeable collection (100+ aircraft and ships) would not be moving with me. My soon to be father-in-law was a veteran who appreciated the collection for the memories it evoked in him and his comrades. He asked his veteran's association if they would take the models. Thirty years later, I think that they are still on display in their "club" in Toronto. One other thought on "where could they go", consider your local schools. It may assist in promoting history and the hobby to future modelers. This is a big softbound book, 176 pages, about 10 inches square. What I found of interest is that all of the photos are in color. Built it in the 70s and would love to do so again and Christmas is the one time that I get to indulge in my old hobbies. I live just outside Toronto Ontario but the Internet is a big world. << I got mine in the advance orderings an they are most defiantly worth getting and I got it from Naval Base Hobbies for 39.oo but that was a prerelease price, current price I think is around 48.00, http://www.modelshipbuilding.com/400hood.htm But if you cant get it from a local hobby shop then I would whole heartedly advise to get it fro Naval Base Hobbies, Shaya was very helpful and notified me every step of the way on my order good luck it's a fantastic model John Anderson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: RDChesneau Subject: Re: Heller Hood Hi Barry, >> Can anyone tell me where I can get a copy of the 1/400 Heller, HMS Hood. Built it in the 70s and would love to do so again and Christmas is the one time that I get to indulge in my old hobbies. << And don't forget the stunning new book on the subject :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: USN Paint, etc >> Does any one know if during the WW2 era if the USN had it's own paint factories at it's shipyards for providing paint made to their specifications. << At the time of WW2, USN paint stocks were mixed and supplied by Norfolk Navy Yard on the East Coast, and Mare Island Naval Shipyard on the West Coast. Remember that, for the most part, this consisted of supplying white paint (5-U) and paste-type tinting material (BTM - Blue Tinting Material; GTM - Green Tinting Material) to be mixed in prescribed amounts by shipyard and ship's personnel. A few colors, such as 5-D Dark Gray, had been supplied pre-mixed, but most were not. >> Lastly at the time of Pearl Harbor did these US Battleships have radar: the Oklahoma ,Utah, and the Nevada. Does any one know of books on the Oklahoma? << Don't know about the radar question without going to my library (no time right now), but I CAN tell you that there is a new book coming from Pictorial Histories on NEVADA: USS Nevada: Two-Ocean Battleship. No price yet, but should be in line with their others in the series. We'll be stocking it as soon as it's available, and you can put in a pre-order if you like. However, is anyone familiar with BISMARCK models built by one or several Bismarck POW's during their Canadian internment? The call out shows 10 5"/38 DP, 4 3" DP, 3x2 40mm, 1x4 40mm, 1x1 40mm, 6x1 20mm, 2x2 20mm, 2 mk 17 rocket launchers. the 5"/38 DP appear to be A, B, and X, and starboard side; single, single, dual mount. Aft of B turret port side is the quad 40mm with a twin 40mm on the starboard side. Aft of the quad are the other two twin 40mm, ships boats, then the 2x2 20mm. The rocket launcher could be aft of them. Aft of the starboard side dual appear to be the 6x1 20mm. That leaves 1x1 40mm (P turret?) and the 4 3" DP (in open mounts?) possibly around the four corners of the bridge; behind and above the quad/twin 40mm aft of B turret and between and above the two single starboard side 5" cross deck from one above and between the two twin 40 on the port side. The photo is quite good but my eyes no longer are.
