Any lead on pictures etc would be appreciated. (:D ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Michael McMurtrey Subject: Decal paper for Ink Jet Printers I just learned of a product which would seem to be a boon to all modelers without an Alps printer at their disposal: JetCal Decal paper. Here are the FAQs from the JetCal web site (http://www.thedecalpaperstore.com/US/index.html). Price is $20.00 for 10 8.5" x 11" sheets or 5 11" x 17" sheets. How can I make JetCal clear? When you purchase JetCal it has a white background and unprinted areas of the decal will appear white. JetCal can be made clear (transparent) if you want unprinted areas of the decal to appear see through. Simply spray the decal with a polyurethane varnish spray (solvent based), which is available from model or DIY stores. Spray JetCal printed decals (on the side that you printed) with polyurethane varnish spray either before you apply the decal or when you have applied the decal to the item that you are decorating. The unprinted areas of the decal will then appear see through. Why should I use decals for decoration? Decals are easy to make and fun to use; good quality and look really professional. You can use them to decorate all sorts of shapes and items. Can I remove the decals? Decals can be easily removed by rubbing with warm water and a sponge. Can I print JetCal using other types of printers? Use JetCal only in an ink jet printer. Why is JetCal different from other slide off decal papers? JetCal is special and different from other decal papers as it can be printed using your home ink jet printer. No sprays or extra treatments needed. All you need to make slide off transfers is a PC, an ink jet printer and JetCal! How can I make the decals more permanent? You can do this in several ways: Apply a clear acrylic paint or a clear polyurethane varnish over the top of the decals and surrounding surface once it has been applied. Some decorated items can be baked in an oven up to 120¡C for 20 minutes (ceramic, glass, metal). For other items bake at 50-70¡C for 30 minutes (wood, perspex). Items that cannot be baked (paper/candles) sometimes can be made more durable by heating the decal when applied to the item with a hair dryer. IMPORTANT: Please e-mail The Decal Paper Store for advice on baking at: questions@thedecalpaperstore.com. Can I make digital decals? It could not be easier! Download your digital photo and print it off onto JetCal. Apply it to the item in the usual way. Can I decorate plastic models using Jetcal? Yes! Jetcal is ideal for this kind of decoration. To improve the adhesion between your decal and the plastic surface, we would recommend using a polyvinylacetate. Paint this on to the model surface and apply your decal before the polyvinylacetate has dried. This will give an excellent finish. You can buy polyvinylacetate from any general hardware store. Why can JetCal decals be printed with standard ink jet inks and then applied by using the slide off method when ink jet inks are not waterproof? Ink jet inks are not waterproof, but JetCal has been specially designed so that standard ink jet inks can be used to print your JetCal decals. JetCal is a 'one stop' solution to creating ink jet decals. JetCal has an ink jet receptive coating to hold ink jet inks so that they will not run or disperse when the decals is soaked in water as part of the slide off application process. Why is JetCal white? JetCal provides many advantages as it has a white background. All areas of the decal, which are not printed, will appear white and not transparent. The white JetCal decal paper allows you to use white in your design, which would not be printed using an ink jet printer. The white background of JetCal also neutralises any effect that the background colour of the item that you are decorating may have and also enhances the ink colour strength. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "John Sutherland" Subject: ORP Dragon - D Day Hi all, Looking for clarification on the ORP Dragon light arnament and some other issues in terms of her D day fit. Light arnament - I have consulted 3 seperate references and they all differ. One says 2 quad pompom, 5 twin 20mm and 4 single 20mm next says 3 quad pompoms, 4 twin 20mm and 4 single 20mm third ref says twin 4in, 4 twin and 4 single 20mm. The kit (reworked HP kit - recent release) provides / shows 3 quad pompoms and 4 twin 20mm only and also has 4 twin torpedo tubes. I also have a rather dim starboard rear quarter photo of Dragon at the time. What that shows is the presence of the twin 4in and no torpedo tubes. I am reasonably satisfied from the photo as to the location of 2 sets of quad pompoms and 4 sets of twin 20mm (where the kit shows them). The unanswered question is where were the 4 single 20mm? Several other D class apparently had a pair on the quarterdeck although I have yet to see a clear enough photo to show where on the rather extensive quarter deck these ships had. Radar - 1 reference doesn't mention them, one says 273 and 290, the other 273, 282 and 286Q. Photo too poor to see radar on the foremast and cannot see a 282 anywhere (but that doesn't mean there wasn't one - if so where?). Photo suggests a 2 or 3 colour camo scheme. HP gives 4 colours but diagram seems to reflect only 3 - B55 (Hellblau - the blue version?), G45 and G10. (the other colour listed is B40 (Dunkelgrau bis Schwarz) which I have never heard of). Scheme otherwise looks like the photo. Scheme also lists the following Stahldeck = Dunkelblau; Holzdeck = Holzfarben; and Schornsteinkappe = Mattschwarz - translations please someone? All help on any or all of the above greatfully received. I realize it is a re-pop of the old Aurora mold. Any mods in this issue of the kit or is it unchanged? How good (or bad) is it? Has anyone purchased it? Are the molds wearing and showing signs of age as in excess flash or bad parting lines? How about warpage? How's the air wing (quality) and whats included? << Apparently, it is the old Aurora mold. I don't have the Aurora kit, but I remember a friend's. I think I have the remnants of the airwing. It had A-4s, F-4s, and A-7s, IIRC, and I wasn't really impressed with them. BTW: Nobody has reviewed this kit on Rajen's List, so if anyone's got the old Aurora kit or the Revellogram repop, please contact Joe Poutre or me. "There seems to be something wrong|David R. I was also incorrect about the exhaust stacks on the B-25Bs; they had a collector ring and a single stack instead of individual ejector stacks used on later models. The photos show the Doolittle airplanes to be pretty clean. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "john fiebke" Subject: Re: artifacts/titanic/bus? >> Nevertheless, at what point does such respect become mere mawkish pretense? Let's face it, the dead of the Titanic were little more than the maritime equivalent of bus-accident roadkill. << I'm speechless. (But still able to write). The Titanic is a grave. By the way...the dead have been removed from the WTC site...do you want to build a Wal-mart there? How 'bout a mini-mall? Those who died there weren't defending their country, so according to your philosophy its clean territory to do with as we will. Sorry for the sarcasm, but I was quite angered by the callousness of this remark. Human life is (or should be...) sacred, regardless of the circumstances. We can learn from pieces of the wreck...it is a way of rememberence...but we shouldn't profit from them. Just my opinion. So, um, how 'bout that 2003 Trumpeter list? john fiebke ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: JFR1945 Subject: Re: Model donations >> I'm afraid your friend at the museum is wrong. We went through this situation a few years ago when someone wanted to donate some models to the Nautical Research Guild. I checked with several tax attorneys, and even contacted the IRS. I doubt the IRS rules on this subject have change recently. Only the value of the Kit or purchased parts can be claimed as a donation. The labor hours "of the donor" cannot be included. Also, any large donation must be backed up with considerable paperwork. I suggest contacting a very knowledgeable tax lawyer, and the IRS before proceeding. This guy isn't a friend. I don't know him personally. He's the curator of the museum. As the curator of a good sized museum, I trust what he tells me since he deals with the IRS about these things. << Some of the confusion here has arisen because the rules are different depending on who gives the model to the museum or other charitable institution. If the modeler gives it, he can run afoul of various rules that have been put in place to prevent fraud and generally do not allow a taxpayer to include the value of his time when valuing charitable contributions. On the other hand, if the modeler has gone to the great hobby shop in the sky, and his estate gives it, then the only issue is the model's fair market value at the time of donation. John Reeder ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: Removal of artifacts from sunken wrecks To: REYNAGA, TIM @ EDD You have made a very good point. As with most subjects, there is a very large gray area, neither black or white. When I was just starting out married life I had to keep my cars running with parts from auto salvage yards, with no thought of the circumstances surrounding the wrecks or the misery and tragedy involved. I was glad to patronize the salvors (who were, of course, running a reasonably profitable business). I make no apologies, excuses, or arguments one way or the other.. That's just the way it was. As I type this my mind bounces around about other salvaged wrecks and their recycling (U. S. S. Squalus, for instance). It is indeed a complex concept, open to divergent points of view.
