This is supported by the book The Ships of Canada's Naval Forces, by Macpherson and Barrie, Vanwell press. Also, stated in the book is that both carriers went to Vancouver to be brought up to RN standards, whatever that means, before going to Britain with RCN Crews to pick up the RN pilots. Darren Scannell ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Roger Buckley" Subject: Model Catalogue CD Ref smml 2021 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1789290560 The Catalogue comes on a CD with no label or jewel case and the CD itself is less than half full and does include a viewer for the JPG format pictures on the CD. There are 14 full catalogues Airfix, several Lindberg, Revell, Monogram, Testors & 1968 Model Buyers Guide. From what I have seen so far the Airfix are excellent quality with many pictures of the completed models and it was great to see some of the kits I made aeons ago (this catalogue is 1976). The 1983 Monogram is the last catalogue. There are also a few Catalogue Cover pictures, several Tamiya and the lack of full Tamiya catalogues on the CD was the major disappointment for me. However as the whole lot cost $12 including postage & packing to the UK the CD represents good value for money. The vendor can be contacted at seller57@mailworks.org. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: Early American Battleships >> there are many pictures available which show the pilot houses of Oregon, Indiana, Iowa, etc. The paneling and other detailing clearly indicate wood. Now the fun part. There are no color pictures, only colorized pictures. But there is plenty of written documentation which describes the wood structure. The finish is called "bright" and refers to a varnished red mahogany color. It was a point of pride with the old time skippers and crew to have a nice shiny "bright" wooden pilot house. The captain's gig was usually finished the same way, again, as a point of pride. << That raises an interesting problem because Mahogany is not red!! The various true mahoganies; i.e Honduran, Cuban etc are a medium brown in color. About the shade of "regular" coffee with creme. Straight varnish would not redden it though it may darken it somewhat. The "Mahogany Red" finished woods are actually stained as well as varnished. So a varnished Mahogany wood surface, absent stain would be a medium brown. Does anyone have a the hull lines for this ship they can lend or copy for me? << Most of the info you need, including hull sections (page 44), can be found in: LaCroix, Eric and Linton Wells II. Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War. (Annapolis, MD: U.S. Naval Institute Press.) 1997. Al Ross ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: JVT7532 Subject: Mini Hobby model kits from China? Anyone know the difference in this kit of the USS Arizona from Mini Hobby models of China verses the Banner kit in 1/350? They sound like their exactly the same kit? Best regards, Jon ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Paul OReilly Subject: RN Escort Carrier Armaments Glasgow; I've just built HMS Puncher using the Tamiya Bogue kit as a base. From an armament perspective there are few modifications needed. Both Puncher and Nabob were built in Puget Sound and sent to British Columbia for fitting out as British carriers. If possible get the book "Nabob - The First Canadian-Manned Aircraft Carrier" by Betty Warrilow. She was the wife of one of the crew and published the book under the auspices of the Escort Carrier Association. ISBN 0-9693438-0-9. It is out of print and you will have a hard time finding it. I offer the following comments: Both ships wore the same camouflage pattern; Nabob's pennant number D77 and Puncher's D79 were the USN standard white with a black shadow affixed on either bow; Both has standard USN radars with the exception of an HF/DF antenna mounted on a pole mast starboard side, in the cat walk, forward of the two 40 mm AA guns; Both had a light grey or white solid stripe around the edge of the flight deck and a solid stripe down the center except where the center line crossed the elevators (lifts); Nabob had the letter "N" at the forward end of her flight deck. There was no center line stripe at that part of the flight deck. I don't have any photo evidence of Puncher having any number or letter on her flight deck at any time; The Bogue kit comes with two directors mounted on a small tower on the quarterdeck just ahead of the two 40 mm guns. Both Nabob and Puncher did not have this arrangement. They had the two directors mounted on a single tower ahead of these guns. The tower had an oval tub holding the two directors. The Nabob book above has a good picture of this and I could scan it and sent it to you should you so desire; The AA fit is pretty much as per the kit. One reference I had said the ships only had 16 - 20 20 mm AA guns. While I can't account for every gun on these ships I do have photo evidence that the two bow guns were there and all the deck edge guns, and at least one of the sponson guns (which leads me to conclude that all of them were probably there); The only other visual difference was that the island did not have that little semi-circular platform at the after end of the upper deck. In addition, the starboard after end of this deck was cut back, presumably to prevent interference with the signal halyards from the yardarms above it. The signal halyards terminated at the flight deck just aft of the island where two flag bags are located (identified only by part number in the kit instructions); There is a tiny catwalk added to the outboard side of the island joining the two search light platforms at either end of the island; Nabob operated mostly Wildcats and Avengers (kit supplied) while Puncher had Wildcats and Barracuda, the latter available from WEM. Both acted as aircraft transports at various times so you could probably put anything you wanted on the flight deck in that case; and The LSO platform was further forward than those depicted on many USN CVEs. It was located between the port after 40 mm AA gun and its director (which was just forward of that gun), obviously at flight deck level. Both Tom's Modelworks and GMM had PE detail sets for this class of ship. I hope this helps. Contact me off-line if you need scans of any of the areas described above. Paul O'Reilly ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: MV Durban Castle The emblem or badge on Alan Millen's mug has been identified by one reader as that of the British & Commonwealth Shipping Co which was formed in 1956 to absorb Union-Castle and Clan lines and their subsidiaries (source: British Passenger Liners of the Five Oceans by Commander C.R. Vernon Gibbs). If this is correct and, since there was only one ship of that name, the time frame for the mug must be somewhere between 1956 and 1962. Michael London ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: MGFoster Subject: Re: Doolittle Raid I'd like to thank all the people who responded to my query about the colors of the B25s in the Doolittle raid. A special thanks to Jeff Herne for his minor treatise on Olive Drab; and Graham Boak's ideas on modelling the planes' color variations. I've discovered the Classic Warships Pictorial #9 "Yorktown Class Carriers" and will be ordering that soon. I found a good price at Internet Hobbies, http://shop.store.yahoo.com/internethobbies, $US10.15. Re: The escort vessels I've found a 1/700 scale model of the USS Salt Lake City from Classic Warship in it's 1943 fit. HP Models has a 1/700 scale model of its sister ship USS Pensacola in its 1939 fit. I might just include the USS Enterprise (CV6) in the mix, a la the "IJN Task Force, Carrier Division 1" of "Omami" http://www.oshipy.com/users/omami/e-top.htm. This is going to take a while . . . . MGFoster:::mgf Oakland, CA (USA) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: MGFoster Subject: USCG Cutters I've noticed a lot of kits/stores/people refer to US Coast Guard ships as "USCG ." E.g.: USCG Taney. The correct identification is "USCGC Taney." That's "Unites States Coast Guard Cutter Taney." Most, if not all, boats/ships in the CG are referred to as a cutter. Actually, I'll go out on a limb and say ALL boats/ships in the CG are called cutters. Even buoy tenders and "40 footers" (if they still have 40s). Just a persnickity something I had to get out. Regards, MGFoster:::mgf Oakland, CA (USA) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Peter Chant" Subject: Production Runs Mike Bartel's note on his new models prompts me to ask something I have often wondered. If it is not a commercial secret, Mike or Caroline Snyder, what sort of numbers do you produce of a particular model? Are we talking 10's, 100's or 1000's? LT Army Tug from the WWII period and would appreciate any photos, particularly of the deck hardware and additional information about the steam towing winch. David Fisher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: John Collins Subject: Ted0330 Ted: Jon Warneke lives in the Knoxville/Oak Ridge area. There now appears to be five known list mates/ship modelers in Tennessee. Ted and any others are invited to contact me: TechnoInfidel@webtv.net. Thanks, John Collins Franlin, Tennessee, USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: billkaja Subject: USCG "spar" color? I'm looking for some recommendations for a close match to the USCG's spar color. I'm really hoping there is a close match in someone's acrylic line of colors. It has been quite a few years since I've seen the coilor up close in person, and the color photos I have are suspect.... I tried Pollyscale's "harvest Gold", but it looks a bit too orange to me. Looking for color recommendations, or failing that, a recipe for mixing it. In either case, I'd like to post the recipe on my USCG kits web page. Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Fernando, Yohan" Subject: HP Glorious a/c Can anyone comment on the type, quantity and quality of the aircraft that come with the HP Glorious kit? Should I plan on getting WEM replacements? I have heard some good comments about this kit and have been waiting for someone to make the early British CVs for a long time...
