While I did not tape the show I wanted to make sure you were aware of two previous Britannic shows; one many years ago when Jacques Cousteau explored her (I have it on VHS - pre-recorded, found it in sale tapes at a Meijer's) and a PBS, I think, show (I have it too, but off the air). However, all my tapes are packed as I am planning to move residence in the near future and I can't get to them right now. I was there on the final day. To my knowledge, it did not "move" anywhere, except back to Fine Art Models, the company that provided the models. << Thanks Vincent! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Baumbach, Werner" Subject: New dutch Frigate Hallo all, A happy, pieceful, healthy and succesful year to all of you. Just read the new copy of my modelling magazine this weekend with an article about "de Seven Provincien", the new Dutch frigate. Looks pretty interesting. Does anyone know of a company that is going to release this new ship. I wish Revell or Pitroad would start releasing some boats of these smaller navies. Happy modelling Werner ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Baumbach, Werner" Subject: HP Models Hallo Peter, I have purchased, but not build the Petr Veliki and the Kursk (modern Russian, not WW2, alright). Both seem decent but not overwhelming. To me, the relation between price and quality/model is not right, but that is only my personal opinion (but even for resin, I find the price pretty discouraging for my limited budget). Both don't have a PE set with them. Casting seems alright, yet the smaller parts look like some work. There has been a thread about HP a while ago and if I remember correctly, the quality would differ from kit to kit significantly. If you can't purchase the models in the UK, contact me offlist (or come to the model show in Dortmund in April. Quite interesting and last year HP was there with some special offers.) Happy modelling Werner ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Gernot Hassenpflug Subject: Izumo Hello Darius, You mention the Izumo - nice kit indeed, I very much enjoyed building it, have a look at photos on the SMML splice the mainbrace pages... You mention improvements you need to make. I agree about the platforms, which are also overly thick, probably that is what makes them too high? I can suggest a small deck that links the bridge to the main mast also, as far as I could tell from photos. The ventilators don't seem to sit at the right height, but I could not figure out exactly what is incorrect. Instead, having completed one, I can use it to correct the next! You mention the 1st volume of "Anathomy of Japanese Battleships". What series is this, and who is the author. If it is Japanese, I would enjoy having a look at it at my leisure. BTW, have fun thinning the davits :-) Gernot Hassenpflug ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "lamkeel" Subject: Is this "ORIGINAL RESEARCH" Hi to you all. On New Years Eve I visited a friend who models R N coastal forces. Bob gave me a most unusual gift. A 4.5 inch square of Double Diagonal Hull Planking and a hull Stringer rivet from a Fairmile "D", - MGB 618. (Including oiled calico between the two planks). She was one of 24 units ordered 27/4/1941 (without the torpedo scallops). MGB 618 completed 27/6/1942 which makes my original piece almost 61 years old. Bob had been down to Shoreham where 618 had been a houseboat. Indeed, I had visited her when I was doing my "original research" for my first book "The fairmile 'D' Motor Torpedo Boat" in the Anatomy of the ship series. It would seem that the local council had ordered that this rather shabby elderly house boat had to be destroyed as it was in poor repair. (They were saying that when I visited about 1982). With the owners permission Bob had returned with a trailer and rescued part of the wheelhouse and a few other bits. (Bob's wife then complained that she was unable to get their car in the garage). I am highly chuffed to have this unique original here in my den/office. I have checked with the original, that the planking is 4.75" wide. It is, spot on. Happy New Year to you all. (From a very wet and flooding England). Yours "Aye" John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: SHIPMDLR Subject: Re: Hand scanners >> Has anyone ever used one of those handheld scanners to do "swipes" of large scale ship plans and then combine them in the computer? I have several plan sets in 1/192, 1/196, etc. that I want to reduce to 1/350th scale, and would MUCH rather have them scanned once and then be able to manipulate the file in PhotoShop or Corel Draw to the scales I want and print them. << I wouldn't buy a hand scanner. I used to have a real good one and even it was very difficult to get to work properly. The difficulty is keeping the scanner held VERY steady and straight while dragging it along. IF you can do both of those you still need to be VERY careful not to drag it too quickly or it doesn't produce accurate images. Doing all this on a plan the size you're talking about would be almost impossible. Then you have to hope your computer program can properly and accurately "splice" all the images together. Once again, on a large plan doing all these things properly is a long shot at best. A hand scanner for work like that just isn't practical. However, it does work well for small areas. I take my plans to a local architectural supply house here in town to have them scanned. They have a large format scanner and can do the job MUCH better than I ever could. They then just hand you a disk and you're on your merry way. Go this route, you'll be much happier. I've done both. I will be getting ready to paint the Kingfisher aircraft on my latest cruiser project and I haven't been to happy with the results of other float planes canopies that I have painted. The more advice/recommendations the better. Roger Torgeson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Dave Miller Subject: Flying boats Happy New Year!! I have two "Duck" model kits. If one looks for them there are quite a few other flying boat kits available, including the Gruman Goose and Widgeon. I recently completed a 1/72 Martin PBM-3 Mariner for a client, and a 1/144 model of the same for myself. Glencoe reissued the Martin and Boeing Clipper boats and the Republic Seabee a few years ago. The Seabee is currently available from an Eastern European company. I have two 1/48 Monogram Catalinas and a a 1/24 frame and tissue Cat in waiting. Hasagawa has (had) a series of flying boats available, including the Martin Marlin. Revel-Germany is releasing the Blohm and Voss BV 222 a six engine monster! I am now completing an interesting Latecoere FB from the pre-WWII era. I have sort of specialized in FB's and have about a dozen different models waiting. (Hmmmm, inventory time??) I have obtained all of these kits through Model Expo and Squadron during the past five years. They are out there, you just have to monitor the catalogs closely. I like flying boats because of their interesting history, aerodynamic configurations, and their connection to the sea. I am scratchbuilding the first battleship New Jersey, BB-16 in 1:144. Time frame, just before the sailing of the Great White Fleet in 1907. I am finished with the hull, superstructure, guns, bridges, boats, etc., and am working on the little bitty pieces. While waiting for my photo etch stanchions, I want to work on the bridge details. Does any one have good close up photos of the upper bridge and platform? There is an area up there behind the military mast the size of a small handball court. Nothing I can find gives me a clue what was on that platform. Photos of NJ or her sisters Rhode Island, Virginia, Georgia, and Nebraska, or even of the Connecticut class would help. Please contact me off list, so we can work out details. I will pay any costs incurred. Thank you. Gary Kingzett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "Robert Healy" Subject: Re: B-47 Alcon, The color pic of the B-47 in "Electronic Wizards" has the aircraft finished in aluminum. NAVY is on the nose in blue or black right over where the standard Air Force markings would have gone. Looks as if the space was cleaned and polished, then the NAVY applied over the spot. 1B007 appears on the nosewheel door, 0-32104 appears on the tail. Light sky blue tail top and a faded or removed slightly darker blue band around the tail a little below that. The caption says theat it is a "Douglas Built NB-47E", the number on the nosegear door is a MASDC number and the tail is a Air Force radio call number. Other than a few bumps and fairings it looks close to a normal B-47. Regards, Bob Healy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "DerekL" Subject: Warspite Hull Sections 1915 I would like to ask you a small favor. I am looking for the Warspite class BB hull lines (cross sections only) as they were in 1915. I am not sure if there is anything available out there but if it is I would be very grateful for a good scan. Cross sections only. Thank you for your help. Derek ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: Preston L Hassler Subject: Re: Catapult aircraft retrieval Just happened to be looking thru old Sea classics. The cover photo of Vol 22 #6, dated June 89, is a picture showing a view from on board USS Missouri (according to the cover photo info) of a Kingfisher being prepared to be lifted on board. The "sled" is attached to a line (appears to be a cable) which goes thru a sheave which is attached to the bottom of the catapult structure and then comes forward past the camera view, presumably attached to a winch (?). The catapult is rotated with the aft end pointing outboard, starboard, about 30-45 degrees (estimated) from the wake. The wake is visible arcing away starboard. Water is relatively calm. I'm looking at the structure supporting the after 3 pdr AA guns, Now these are labelled as "Officer's WC". The doors open in, the question is, what kind of door do you think they used? As this structure is seperate, and not of structural integrity for water, I am thinking they might have put some square type flat door. Do you think they would have used a rounded "dogged" door for something like this? There are lots of examples of this kind of door in the AOS WARSPITE, HOOD, and DREADNOUGHT. I can't see dogging yourself in to use the loo, as it where though. Needless to say, it's an area where I haven't seen a decent photo, in any of the similar classes either. Details, details, details.
