Had a look and thought it was pretty nice, at least in the box. It retails for around $250CDN. Northstar Hobbies has been trying to get more ship stuff in and seems to have a nice selection. They stock WEM paints and are just getting the Model Master Acryl Naval paints. Check them out if you haven't already. They also do mail order, but are still in the process of getting a catalogue online. For anyone who cares about such things, I have no financial interest, but do know the people there quite well. Regards, Darren Scannell ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: andrew jones Subject: U-boats in American waters & artist paints I re-call reading about a u-boat landing commandoes on US soil. but it was not to destroy just one refinery, they were landed to cause havoc on the eastern sea board..i think there were supposed to throw fake coal in furnaces & blow up rail yards or something like that...i recall one gave himself up & allowed the others to be arrested..he was jailed for sometime i cant re-call the total amount & the others were sent to the chair & one took a few goes before he finally passed away... but i though the sub was sunk later on in its patrol....might still have the book some where in my mess..will have to see if it has the u-boat number, Also, does anyone ever use artist paints(as in to paint framed pictures etc), like Jo Sonia or Windsor oil/acrylic paints on their kits?..was just curious. thanks Andrew Jones Oz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: George Colleen Hargreaves Subject: British Navy WW1 Paint Colours Hi, With the recent release of HMS Furious, there was a suggestion on which colours to use. In hopes of getting S&S to issue a WW1 chip set I found these colours in "British Warships 1914-1919" by FJ Dittmar & JJ Colledge Ian Allan Ltd 1972. Has anyone made these up? Colour of HM Ships: Chronological Notes 8. 9.14 Flotilla leader FAULKNOR has been painted grey 19.11.14 Hulls and weather work of all H M ships in home waters except torpedo craft to become light grey. Mixture to be 1 part black to 20 parts white by weight. 27.3.15 Destroyers of the 6th Flotilla experimentally patchy grey. 6.4.15 Destroyers to remain dead black but masts to become a very light grey. 6.4.15 A false bow wave to be painted on all ships. 7.5.15 False bow wave not to be painted on destroyers and torpedo boats. 1.6.15 No bow wave on any ships. 13.7.15 Paint flotilla leaders grey. destroyers remain black. 18.8.15 Armed trawlers to be painted In their original fishing colours with their commercial fishing numbers. 1916 The cruiser CARYSFORT temporarily painted blue. 15.4.16 Approval given to paint destroyers of the 2nd DF grey while with that command. 23.5.16 Commander-In-Chief Rosyth's proposal to paint his torpedo craft grey approved-to be done during the summer months. 7. 7.16 All torpedo craft hitherto black to be painted grey. Hull 1 part black to 20 parts white (by weight), upper works to use mixture 1 part black to 23 parts white. 14. 7.16 Boats of destroyers to be painted grey, 1 part black to 23 parts white. 1. 8.16 H M ships and armed patrol yachts to be painted grey (formula 1 :20 black and white). Destroyers to remain dead black with masts very light grey. 4. 8.16 Upper works of destroyers and leaders painted grey. 22. 8.16 Suggested that submarines be painted black on horizontal parts, vertical parts grey. Colour depends upon decision of Senior Officer of each area. 19. 4.17 Topmasts of H M ships to paint 1 part black to 250 parts white (by weight) mixture by order of Commander-in-Chief, Grand Fleet. 10. 8.18 Dazzle camouflage painting ordered for merchant ships and armed merchant cruisers of the 10th CS. 8. 2.19 All light cruisers on East Indies and China stations to be painted white. 1. 3.19 Survey ships to be painted white. Notes: In spite of the confusion generated in painting orders concerning destroyers and torpedo boats, it can be concluded that order of 7.7.16 did become effective by 15.8.16 and from that date the pendant numbers were painted up. An order from 1914 specified that two ensigns were to be flown by H M ships in order that confusion resulting from distant similarities between the white ensign and the German ensign could be reduced. An order dated 19.11.14 put into effect a system of markings on the after two funnels to denote divisional status; this system was a repetition of earlier ones and did not remain in effect for long. The colour notes above all originated from Admiralty fleet orders of that date and were effective when received. Date format is DD.MM.YY. Thanks, George Hargreaves ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "John Sutherland" Subject: Re: H and I class destroyers many thanks to all that have responded on this subject - especially for pointing me to the Amazon to Ivanhoe publication now on order - just what I needed. John Sutherland Porirua New Zealand ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Graeme Martin Subject: Fleetscale Warspite Hi Roger. Sorry about the email address. it's kiwidownunder58@yahoo.com.au You will find some very nice models on Belfast as well. I think there's are Scharnhorst and a Belfast among others. Also think some of them are John Haynes work. His standard is an excellent benchmark for any aspiring amateur. Let me know how you progress after you get back from London. cheers, Graeme Martin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "George Peat" Subject: Re: Fleet Scale Andy Vu, Fleet scale is the manufacturers name and the produce the majority of their mosels to 1/128 scale. The range at this scale includes Battleships,Cruisers and a Destroyer. HMS Hardy. They also do a small range of other scales including 1/72nd scale and fittings to match. George Peat ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: roger.antrobus Subject: Fleetscale Hi Andy-vu Fleetscale is a company selling semi-kits principally in 1/128 scale and a few in 1/96, 1/72 and 1/48. As I understand it the kit comprises a fibreglass hull and plans and the option to buy a fittings pack (or individual items) made by Precision Control, Quaycraft and Simar. A limited number of kits also offer a weather deck. So other than the hull one is scratch building. All the best, Roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Michiel Woort" Subject: Interested visit Yesterday evening I visited the S-130, in Den Helder Harbour. After seeing the boat in Wilhelmshafen it was a nice opportunity to see the boat inside. The boat is now in hands of a group of English people and one Dutch one, who will try to bring the boat back in WW2 conditions. The will bring the boat back to Southampton where fund raising and restoration will start. They told me they already had an agreement with Mercedes Bens to get four complete overhauled engines. Inside there is a lot of work to do, but the inside plan looks still very on the old situation. When every thing goes right the boat will now be hanging behind a tug to go to England. Greetings, Michiel Woort ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: American Heritage article To James Hathaway: Thanks for the notification about the article in American Heritage magazine concerning the WW 1 sub chaser program you mentioned in Volume 2131 of SMML, article no. 8. There are many advantages to living in a small town, but a news stand carrying American Heritage magazine is not one of them. Therefore I would appreciate it if you would please advise the Month, Volume number, and Issue number of the magazine containing the article, as well as the title and author. It will be of great help in locating a copy. If you have an interest in these vessels, contact me off post at fkbrown90@aol.com and I will be glad to share some material I have (contained in a stack of hard copy over 11" high, you are talking with a real "nut" here). Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Katz, Gene S" Subject: Re: Interesting items on E-Bay We concur with the observation of people paying more dollars for a model, plus shipping, than the model could be purchased for online. I, and a fellow modeler here at work, are continually amazed at people bidding $90 something plus shipping for a model easily obtainable for less than half the price at (for instance, no plug intended) ModelExpo, etc. P.T. Barnum was right. Even my wife, that great source of domestic opposition about bringing more models into the house, has to agree that well, if a model is going on e-bay for $X, than maybe it is OK for me to buy it at $X/2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Leonard, Michael W" Subject: New Osprey Books Some upcoming 2003 releases from the Osprey New Vanguard series (no publication dates listed): #6070 Pirate Ships 1660-1730 #6071 German Battleships 1939-1945 #6074 British Motor Torpedo Boats 1939-1945 #6075 German Pocket Battleships 1939-1945 #6079 American Heavy Frigates 1794-1826 Osprey Fortress Series [new line of books]: #FR001 Japanese Pacific Island Defenses 1941-1945 #FR003 U-Boat Bases and Bunkers 1940-1945 #FR004 American Defenses of Corregidor and Manila Bay 1898-1945 #FR008 Defenses of Pearl Harbor and Oahu 1907-1950 Mike L. Baca" Subject: New Changes at Model Ship Journal Model Ship Journal is changing to reflect the vast majority of ship modelers who build in plastic and especially 1/700 & 1/350 scales. Steve Wiper of Classic Warships, a noted ship model maker, researcher and warship book publisher, has joined Model Ship Journal as our plastic/resin kit contributing editor. Steve will be bringing his expertise in the field to each issue effective immediately (he has 30+ pages alone submitted for the Spring 2003 issue). Mr. Wiper will cover what's new in plastic/resin ship model kits and will contribute reviews of photoetch accessories, books and plans for plastic ship modeling. And you can expect to see excellent research material from his extensive archives. We are working on the Spring 2003 issue (Vol.4, #1) which will go to press next Friday and will be the first issue with our new kit orientation. It will be 70-80% plastic ship model material (that still leaves 20% for the scratchbuilders), including our usual plan and photo prototype ship features. Much of this material will pertain to available plastic model subjects as well. MSJ has been receiving outstanding response and solid support from the industry with this tighter focus on plastic/resin kit modeling, I hope you enjoy it. Remember the film, with John Wayne in an 80' Elco fighting the invading IJN? Well, he had the wrong boat, but we don't. Now shipping: NS 008, 1/350 scale PT-34, one of the 77' Elcos that actually did the fighting in the Philippines in the early days of 1942. In fact, this boat was skippered by Al Ross' father. You can add this important piece of history to your warship model collection. Mastered by Peter Hall, the kit is to our usual high casting quality standards, includes a colour profile in the plans, and comes with its own dedicated photoetch. Price is £10.00 (£11.75 UK/EU), with free shipping worldwide.
