One rationale was that in the event of a sinking the tanks would float free and thus be recoverable (along with the dangerous contents) and not be a hazard. Was I being snookered, Lads (it wouldn't be the first time)? They were from London. Jim Johnson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Ives100 Subject: Re: San Fran hobby shops >> Ships: Fisherman's Wharf has a couple of which I am aware; the steel-hulled windjammer 'Balclutha', a Gato-class boat (Pampanito? do not hold me to that). As a side note, the local political powers, living in the heart of "PC", thought an attack submarine was "Too War-Like", and for a time refused to grant access to facilities for the boat. << Pampanito is a Balao (Sandlance variant), not a Gato class. Built at Portsmouth, NH (well, actually Kittery, Maine). Francisco hobby shops etc Well, if you are going to take the time to visit some of the other ships you may as well go on the other side of the bay to Richmond and visit the USS RED OAK VICTORY. I might add, this make us the only place I know of where you can visit both a Victory and a Liberty ship within driving distance of each other Michael Donegan NAVYDAZE Naval & Aviation Artist http://www.navydaze.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: m.f.mclaughlin Subject: Re: HMS Glorious plans and photo's Hi Stephen Bolton, If you look on abebooks.com you will find two copies of Norman Friedman's book on British Carrier Aviation. This book contains a starboard profile and flight deck drawing of HMS Glorious by Alan Raven as she looked in 1938 with Neutrality markings on her flight deck. The book contains a number of photographs of Glorious throughout the 30's as well as a set of port, starboard and stern views of her in camouflage captioned as having being taken (7 June 1940) the day before she was sunk. The only other published drawings of her that I know of are to be found in R.A. Burt's book on British Battleships 1919-1939. Burt's two page drawing of Glorious shows her starboard profile in 1932 as well as a seperate internal profile done in the same large scale. Both drawings are highly detailed. Burt also, provides on the same page, seperate segment profile drawings showing her (1936 refit) flight deck extension on her stern as well as her (1937 modified) funnel & supertructure profile. This book also, contains a number of good photographs of her. Both books are out of print and will likely be very expensive to buy but, the Friedman book is much easier to find. Hope that helps, Miles F. Denbigh Hobbies, Newport News, best all around model shop, mostly models of all types, small amount of trains. About a 30-40 minute drive from Norfolk if traffic on I-64 and the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel isn't bad. Weekend traffic tends to be heavy, try alternate I-664 route, longer but at least you're moving! 2. Hobbytown, Virginia Beach, OK selection of models ( oddly, a small selection of ship models), big on RC, trains, gaming, slot cars. 3. Hungates in Greenbriar, Pembroke, and Patrick Henry Malls, arts and craft stores with a reasonable selection of models, but generally no one who can answer a modelling question. 4. Toycraft, Norfolk, mostly trains, small selection of models. Don't forget to visit Nauticus Maritime Center in downtown Norfolk and tour the battleship USS Wisconsin. Also theres the Mariners Museum in Newport News (not far off I-64) where you can see the parts of the USS Monitor undergoing restoration along with a Titanic exhibit (I think its still there), and other world class nautical exhibits, nice gift/book shop also. In downtown Portsmouth theres the small Naval Shipyard Museum with a piece of the CSS Virginia's armor plate on exhibit. The Virginia Air and Space Museum in Hampton has a nice selection of aircraft on display including amoung others, a USAF F-4 Phantom (a real MiG killer), F4U Corsair, F-106, P-39, a NASA space capsule thats been in space (I forget which mission), some nice naval aviation model exhibits, interactive displays, IMAX theater, etc. Hope you enjoy your visit. Dress coolly, its been very hot and humid here lately.
