The most recent one was last 12 October at Theale, near Reading, Berks, UK - about one hour by car from Heathrow (leave M4 at Junction 12). I have in the past flown over from Rome especially for it, but this time I happened to be in the UK anyway. I know that there were several other SMMLies there running stands but I thought a buyer's view might be interesting for the list. Naturally, this is a selective view, and I apologise in advance to those whose stalls I didn't visit and therefore don't mention. The sellers at WSE shows are largely of finished models both new and second-hand, ranging all the way from independent professional modellers like Sean of Sea Vee Models or John Staggs of Santa Rosa (both of whom I know to be SMMLies) to stockists of Navis Neptun etc like Mike Hayes of Saxon Models. There are also sellers of naval books. But for SMML I should focus on the people who were selling ship _kits_ as such, which require you to exercise your own modelling skills before there is anything to display. Naturally in 1/1200 this is a short list, more's the pity. Dave Willcocks of Dreadnought Models brought along a large number of Superior models, many made up and painted, and many more in box. The Alnavco website features lists of the extensive range available. Martin Brown (usbrownsat@btopenworld.com) brought along some kits by Mountford Metal Miniatures, who is a new independent entrant. The kits do not contain any contact details at all for the maker, nor a list of what models are available or planned. I bought a Graf Spee - hull looks very good and true to size etc as per Breyer, but the scheer on the bow is perhaps a little too steep (sorry, couldn't resist that one!) and the twin flak mounts a trifle under-sized. Also on this stand were a number of older Fleetline and Clydeside offerings, both lines now hard to find. The above-mentioned lines are white metal kits, as are the well-known offerings from Skytrex (who were not at the show, and whose major interests are now 1/700 and 1/350 scales). Len Jordan was also there with his extensive range of resin merchant models, which are being upgraded to include some white-metal rigging pieces. One of the book vendors had a limited selection of Fujimi Aoshima etc 1/700 unmade second-hand kits at very reasonable prices, but unfortunately I didn't get his name. Next similar meeting is at Wellow Village Hall, in West Wellow, Hampshire. The hall is on Lower Common Road, off the A36 (leave M27 at Junction 2) - I would estimate about 90 mins to get there from Heathrow, but allow more for the return journey as traffic builds up. In 2004, WSE are only running two shows, 14 March and 17 October, both at Theale. Apparently attendance at other locations has been variable, whereas Theale is consistently well-supported both by the trade and buyers (certainly there seemed to be more people there last weekend than I can remember for several years). Jacques Druel L'Arsenal ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20) From: SteveWiper Subject: Re: Latest "In Action" Title Michael, I would like to make a few points based upon your review of the "Flush Deck Destroyers in Action" book by Squadron Signal Publications. The first is about this comment; >> Color profiles are provided for USS Stockton (DD-73) in 1918 splinter camouflage of light grey, medium grey, light blue, and dark blue (NOTE: these World War One colors are basically speculative, but consistent with surviving models in the Washington Navy Yard Museum). << I have actually seen some of the original USN camouflage design sheets, which were done in color in 1/192 scale. They are at the US National Archives, although not cataloged, therefor not available to the general public, I was fortunate enough to go into the back storage vaults and view these. The above colors are correct and did indeed exist and they were actually used. The only colors I have found to be speculative are red, orange, yellow, etc., which I have seen on the merchant ship camouflage design sheets, also in color, but not on any of the warship camouflage design sheets from that time period. The next point I would like to make would be on the following sentence; >> Except for the dubious Squadron practice of trying to "approximate" WW2 camouflage colors to modern FS series, this is an inexpensive and highly worthwhile book for fans of these early destroyers. << I would go one step further and say that making FS number approximations of the now well known USN camouflage paint colors (thanks to persons like Raven, Snyder & Short) is not actually a "Squadron" practice, but an Al Adcock practice, which is really very ignorant, as the FS paint number system is a totally different system, making the colors different. Also, like much of the text, this authors works are full of mistakes and disinformation. All of this could be avoided by finding good proofreaders, but Mr. Adcock has failed to do this in any of his works. I have found major mistakes on almost every page, many of which could have been easily avoided. I would say that all of the ship "In Action" books are well worth the $10 price just for the photos and Don Greer's cover art, but dont read some of them! Steve Wiper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21) From: Bob Reddy Subject: Re: Victory at Sea DVD Stephen, The Richard Rodgers music was composed to accompany each of the 26 installments of the "Victory at Sea" series. The recurring theme wasn't that obvious when each show was viewed seperately - it does become a bit overdone when the whole series is viewed at one sitting. just my two cents worth. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Ron Wild ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 30) From: Rick Heinbaugh Subject: Re: Esso Montpelier Michael, I guess you'll hear this same info several times over. Esso Montpelier was a smallish, nearly one-off design, rather than being one of the huge class of wartime-built T-2 tankers. As such, you cannot use one of the few existing tanker kits to represent her very accurately. Per "Victory Ships and Tanker", by L.A. Sawyer and W. H. Mitchell, she was 450' in overall length and 66'6" in beam. It seems the Esso Concord may be her only twin sister. In "Ships of the Esso Fleet in World War II", there is a photo of her shortly after launching, partly obscured by smoke from a tug alongside. This book gives a little bit of info about the ship's travels during the war, and lists the names of all the Captains and Chief Engineers. (small comfort for a modeler).
