Foran" Subject: Re: SMML in Nebraska In answer to the CapnAgee's question about the farm equipment models, I only moved here last June and haven't been able to attend any model contests here yet, but would not be surprised to find some farm equipment models (kits for this stuff does exist, but I know of no PE available yet). While living in Mississippi, I did build a 1/25 scale AMT kit of a medium-duty John Deere farm tractor (maybe a 4020?) as a gift for my father, who collects John Deere memorabilia (a popular hobby for farm-oriented types). Also, at one of the local IPMS shows (I think it was at Verona, MS), a farm equipment model did win a prize. It was a 1/25 scale model of a lowboy flatbed tractor-trailer holding a couple of farm tractor models, weathered to represent equipment fresh from a muddy field. In real life, this stuff doesn't stay dirty very long, it is too valuable to neglect. Sorry, but I can't help you on the spelling problem. Les Foran Ogallala, Nebraska ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Michael McMurtrey Subject: Liberty Ship Plans Ian Wrenford's on-line article, "SCRATCH YOU A LIBERTY (think about it!)" (http://smmlonline.com/articles/libertyship/libertyship.html) mentions a set of plans of the Liberty Ship from Model Shipwright quarterly. Does anyone know where I can find this issue/plans set? Michael McMurtrey ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: Final roll call? And another thread Now that the Roll Call seems to have been finished, I hope the old timers who have heard mine in the past will be kind enough to bear with me as I introduce myself to some of the newer people. I am in the fifth year of my ninth decade (go figure, CAREFULLY !!!!!), and am a professor emeritus of Northeastern University (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.). I have been widowed for ten years now, and have gotten used to it. Although I like larger dogs, I have no domestic "pets" (they would cramp my style). As for cats, well, they and I have a non-aggression pact. I think I may be eligible for a couple of records in SMML, the oldest modeler (chronologically speaking) and the longest time to make a model. An uncle gave me a kit drawing from an old Bluejacket kit for a WW 1 C-1 Class 110 Ft. submarine chaser when I was a High School sophomore in 1934. My woodworking shop teacher, whom I remember fondly to this day, approved of my using it to make the hull as a term project. When the term ended, I had finished the hull, and it came out well. Just about then I got a car, and discovered girls, and you can guess what happened to the chaser model (I began chasing other models). Then I got married, helped raise a family, built a career, etc. You know the drill. After my wife succumbed to cigarettes, I ran across the hull and the drawing under a bench in the barn. I have no idea how or why I kept them all these years, but there they were. Knowing much less than I did at 15, I began a mission to find out as much as I could about these vessels. I wanted to finish the semi-scratch built model and have it as accurate as possible. Captain Ted Treadwell and his website gave me the impetus to precede. By joining the U.S.S. CONSTITUTION Model Shipwright Guild with its inspiring makers of exquisite models, and by enrolling in SMML and thereby meeting such superb modelers as Art Herrick, Mike Leonard, Bob Santos, et al, and by going bonkers to make the model as detailed as I could, I finally got it in a case in 2002, sixty eight years after laying the keel. Yup, 68 years!!! The only other model I have made is another semi-scratch jobby, the whaleship Charles W. Morgan, with super-correct rigging and fittings. This one was a warm-up for finishing the chaser. I have not started another model since encasing these two. Instead, when I realized what a treasure trove (more than a standard file drawer full) of information, data, specifications, histories, drawings, photos, etc. I had accumulated, I suddenly saw that here was a good chance to exhibit my gratitude to all those who have so generously helped me in this quest. Therefore I began a new hobby of creating provenances of specific chasers (there were 440 of them built in 1917 and 1918) at the request of relatives of original crewmen. I do not charge for this, it's a hobby, fagawdsayk! The only thing I ask is for the relatives to share all they know about the crewman and his vessel. As a result my files have increased in usefulness with this enhancement, and the specific histories have improved greatly. I extend this historical research offer to the SMML community at large. Hey, at this price, it's an offer you can't refuse. Contact me at fkbrown90@aol.com. if I can be of any help. My sub chaser interest is narrowly focused on wooden hulled WW 1 SC-1 Class 110 footers only. If you want to know about chasers of the WW 2 persuasion, contact Captain Ted Treadwell at diiodor@aol.com for information. Thanks for your patience with me, so far. And now for the thread. I have heard that U.S.S. ARIZONA is technically not a commissioned vessel of the U.S. Navy. Instead it is in some other special respected category. It may have something to do with the National Park Service. Any truth to this, SMML? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Don Macdonald" Subject: Re: gentle sex from that Portland Rustbucket Amy Wellcome aboard nice to see some ladys here finely. But I have to tell you something you may like to here. My wife is into RC racing so am I to a point. she is just about the only women that is with the group we been racing together for many years, Kind of funny when I walk into a Hobbie shops alot some will ask whear is Diane, Like she says alot know her but she has problems trying to remember them just an intresting story, She is very heavy into her RC dirt trucks Electric, but she likes the none milatary ships and has own 3 ft Amsterdam tug. So, when guys come up to me for answers on RC truck racing I tell them to go talk to her and when it comes to the ship unless it has to do the RC part of it she tells them to go to me. Don that Portland Rustbucket from Portland Oregon USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: andrew jones Subject: P & O Himalaya Hiya I was just wondering if there is a kit of the cruise ship? or even a set of plans around? Will send a photo of it in the next few days to get posted to see if it jogs anyones minds thanks Andrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: brya1716 Subject: Re: Decal Idea How about something that I don't think is available? Signal flags in 1:350 scale should be something that any ship modeler in that scale would covet. Bill Bryant ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "raymond guy" Subject: Battle of Feline Bay G'Day All John the thought of even a smaller fret and modelling through a microscope brings on nightmares of white vans and men in white coats carrying restraining devices appearing at the front door, alternately the local brewery is going to have to go on overtime. I surrender no prize required! To Dave in Dixie. These are some of the most caculating b------s you have ever come across hence the reference to Al you now what. I have a high back chair and the one sod sits on the top of the headrest and watches me make a fool of myself handling the pe parts. I am not always aware that he is there until a paw flies out and a fret gets hooked and crumpled and consigned into orbit. They move so damm quietly you're not aware of them until the foul deed has been committed. Hence they have been banished to the Syrian backyard! As for training them to assist you must be joking other than destruction their lives revolve around eating sleeping and crapping in that order. Regards to all SMML animal lovers out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "David Griffith" Subject: Re: The Battle of Feline Bay! Someone else wrote, >> Absolutely. The prize is an even smaller photoetch fret! << Dear John-the-Sadist, Never mind using every part on a photoetch fret. What I'd like to know, is there also a prize for someone who can actually fold your 25mm triple Japanese anti-aircraft guns? And please don't tell me it's one of those extremely stylishly tailored jackets in heavy canvas and leather. The ones with the very long sleeves and all the buckles up the back!! Regards (from a kneeling position, peering short-sightedly at the carpet), David-the-Masochist ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Michael McMurtrey Subject: Our Sponsors (an unsolicited testimonial) I want to put in a good word for Shane and Lorna, owners of Sandle Hobbies and sponsor of this mailing list. On the 12th I ordered a back issue of Plastic Ship Modeler through their web site. On the 14th they acknowledged my order and stated it had been shipped. Today, the 18th (all dates US) I received it via airmail. That's 4 days from Australia to Oklahoma! It was also well-packed in a (reusable!) zip-lock plastic bag inside a sturdy, semi-rigid shipping envelope. I work for a fraternal organization, and we pride ourselves on our services to members, but theirs is better customer service than i have received from most US vendors, and only for one copy of a magazine! I highly recommend them, no matter where in the world you might be. Shane and Lorna, thank you for your service to your customers, and for sponsoring this mailing list. I also have original drawings for pom pom directors. But I'm not sure which type you require as I gave my copy of that particular AOTS away to my cousin who served aboard the Vic. Have a look at my web site (Weapons section) on www.john-lambert-plans.com (The answer to the other question is 4).
