It is long out of print and could take months to get it on inter-library loan, if at all. I am looking for the profile and plan drawing of the USS Pensacola in her 1943-44 fit contained therein. If anyone has it, I would gladly cover the cost of scanning or copying it. Thanks, John Collins Franklin, TN, USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Ernst-Bernhard Kayser Subject card models >> ... Has anyone tried or had any (good) luck using card models as templates for scratchbuilding ships? .... << Hi Doug check out the Harald Ziewe's web-page http//www.ziewe.de/index1.htm He already did what you are suggesting. Most of his webpage is in German but the pictures "Schiffsmodelle" speak for themselves. For how-to instructions in English click the "English" button. Also, look at "Modellbautips". These are the instructions in German plus some helpful pictures which come with English captions. One of the more tedious tasks is to transfer the patterns from paper to plastic. I wonder whether the following method would work. 1. scan the pattern 2. edit to remove color fills until only outlines are left 3. laser print a mirror image on paper 4. transfer image from paper to plastic with an iron at very low heat. If someone is adventurous enough to try this method, please let me know how it turned out. Greetings Bernhard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Stephen Varhegyi" Subject Points of interest for the hobbyist in Germany Hi I'll be in Germany for a couple of weeks in May. Mainly in Bavaria but also doing a drive up the Rhine to Koblenz. I've heard about the Reichs Museum in Munich but are there any other attractions of interest for military history, particularly war ships and aircraft? I'd appreciate any information. Regards Steve Varhegyi ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Brooks Rowlett Subject Re Updating Friedman - any second editions (not just reprints) coming? >> ....Destroyers (Spruance) could benefit from a second edition because there is new material, even apart from newer document declassifications which could amplify the design histories of postwar ships. I know it would be very hard to improve on these classic volumes, but does anybody know of any plans for second editions, or perhaps a separate supplement which might be cheaper for USNIP to produce? << A second edition of the destroyers book is planned. Note that the TICONDEROGA class were in this book since they are SPRUANCE hulls and might not have even been reclassified as CGs yet when it was first released, I would have to look back in the book. Brooks A. Rowlett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From John Wressell Subject Krupp Railroad Guns Not that it is a nautical subject but has nayone come across any kits for the huge railroad guns made by Krupp during WWI & WWII? Would appreciate any leads. Thanks, John Wressell ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Fox, John" Subject Re gravity davits Try this link. There is a bunch of info on davits and boat stowage. http//www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/nstm/ch583.pdf John Fox ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Randy Ward Subject Re card models >> Has anyone tried or had any (good) luck using card models as templates for scratchbuilding ships? It looks so tempting, with all those pesky angles and curves already figured out....it appears that it would be easy to transfer all that stuff to plastic and fashion everything one needs to produce a good model. Any input will be greatly appreciated. << Doug, I've often thought of doing so. I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work. And the offerings often fill in the gaps in styrene offerings, not to mention it's easy to pick your scale! You may need to use .010" or even .005" styrene for areas where flexibility is needed. And a hair dryer may help soften the styrene where you need to do complex curves. Let us know how it goes! Cap'n Randy (who has a good collection of paper model patterns, from the Mauretania to the Oriana) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Leonard, Michael W" Subject Friedman DD Book Reissue >> I know it would be very hard to improve on these classic volumes, but does anybody know of any plans for second editions, or perhaps a separate supplement which might be cheaper for USNIP to produce? << Check the USNIP web site. The destroyer book was due to be republished with new material last year but was delayed for some reason. Now it's supposed to come out some time in 2004. Mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Subject Re card models >> Has anyone tried or had any (good) luck using card models as templates for scratchbuilding ships? It looks so tempting, with all those pesky angles and curves already figured out....it appears that it would be easy to transfer all that stuff to plastic and fashion everything one needs to produce a good model. Any input will be greatly appreciated. << Doug I asked about this a little while back but got no response. Yes it can be done and I first saw it at the Model Engineering Exhibition in London in 1969. But you don't just have to take my word for it because Harald Ziewe is very good at it. http//www.ziewe.de/schiffe.htm and Tim Perry has done this one in the same way but to his own design http//www.kipperboxes.co.uk/html/lct_mk_4.html For smaller scales scan the parts into a graphics programme for resizing, use them to build a plastic eggcrate and fill with car body putty.
