Dan Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Tony Mattson" Subject Re D-day Michael comments >> Didn't Ike in his memoirs say it stood for Disembarkation Day? << He may well have done When someone wrote to General Eisenhower in 1964 asking for an explanation, his executive assistant Brigadier General Robert Schultz answered "General Eisenhower asked me to respond to your letter. Be advised that any amphibious operation has a 'departed date'; therefore the shortened term 'D-Day' is used." But this doesn't mean Ike was right. Schultz also commented that the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 wasn't the only D-Day of World War II. Every amphibious assault-those in the Pacific, in North Africa, and in Sicily and Italy-had its own D-Day. I understand that the French designate such days as "Jour-J" (and not Jour-D for Débarquement, or Jour-P for Partez). Tony Auckland, NZ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject True D Day To All who answered about D Day, Thanks for your enlightening information. If I interpret the answers (and recall the timing) correctly, the D Day (June 5) initial invasion landings (June 6) really happened on D+1 Day. Would the following days really be D+1 Day plus one (June 7), D+1 Day plus two June 8, D+1 Day plus three (June 9), etc.? Hmmmm? Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "John Clements" Subject Heller 1/400 HMS Hood One of the most significant criticisms of this kit is the incorrect width of the shelter deck, and various solutions have been mentioned as means of widening it, usually either adding strip to the outer edge or replacing the whole piece. As both these require stripping off and rebuilding or repositioning the moulded detail, I looked for another means that might be less drastic. I thought I might approach the problem by attaching all the superstructure pieces that support the shelter deck in their correct positions, with some small adjustments as necessary, to the forecastle and upper decks. I am also taking the opportunity to build the partitioning in the area visible amidships beneath the shelter deck (behind the old 5.5 inch gun positions) in its correct configuration. To correct the shelter deck moulding itself, it seemed to me that the easiest option is to cut the piece in two down the centreline but not taking the cut right to each end. The tapering ends could be detached, so as not to change their shape, a plastic fillet put in the middle of the main section to bring the edges up to the sides of the hull, and the tapering ends corrected by adding tapered.strip to the edges to match the supporting pieces already in place. Before I get my razor saw out, I wondered if anybody had tried this approach successfuly , or whether there are good reasons why it might not work. This is going to be my 'big project' for the second half of the year (with WEM P/E of course), and I'd hate to spoil it at the outset. The drawings are fully detailed, including ALL the internal arrangements. They're mostly parts from Tirpitz and Scharnhorst kits. They include (but are not limited to) 2 283mm triple turrets (new) 4 150mm single mounts (new) 6 150mm twin mounts (used) 8 105mm twin mounts (used) Numerous light AA guns Most of a Tirpitz superstructure. several gun directors I'm looking for things in other scales. I could use some lower hulls for 1/700 DML/Dragon Ticonderoga class CGs/Spruance class DDs. In terms of Kriegsmarine stuff, I'd be most interested in 1/570 scale 150mm twin mounts from a Scharnhorst/Gneisenau, but other things could interest me too, including 1/720 parts for some quasi-hypothetical German cruisers & carriers. 1/720 105mm would be useful. As for other stuff, but I like 1/500 to 1/600 scale parts, WWII to modern. I like Airfix, Aurora, Revell, Renwal, some Monogram, etc. I'm always interested in big hulls for hypotheticals. Some 1/700 parts (Skywave parts packs, e.g) are useful as well. "There seems to be something wrong | David R. Wells with our bloody ships today" | Adm. D.
