Hi David, Thanks for the input. While the "patrol" boat I'm referring to is marked up in a spurious PT code, it is definetly not a PT boat. However, the "urban legend" your father speaks of is true. For many years Captain Schumann's Whale Watching boat was an ex PT, while some tourist sites claim it still is a PT, the real thing was retired in the '70s or early '80s. Don't know anything about the engine change but it sure does make sense. Gary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Jimmy Bloom" Subject Wildwood, NJ patrol boat? I grew up in the Atlantic City, NJ area. There WAS a WWII surplus Higgins boat that used to take on excursioners for rides along the Atlantic City coast.. This was in the 1950s and 1960s. She was called "Miss Atlantic City". I rode in her once, quite a bouncy wet ride, but fun. It's possible that there was another PT boat sold to Wildwood people or maybe they bought the Miss Atlantic City. The Wildwood patrol boat #109 might be used by the beach patrol. In Atlantic City, they still use rowed 20-foot surfboats, similarly to many South Jersey resorts. Perhaps Wildwood's lifeguards use a motor launch auxiliary. Jim Bloom ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From ALROSS2@aol.com Subject Re NJ patrol boat The boat in question is probably Ron Sinn's ELCO, the former (I think) PT 486. Ron's dad originally owned the boat and sold it years ago. Ron bought it back a few years ago and is restoring it to wartime configuration. It will be used for a variety of purposes and will operate under its own power. I've provided him with technical info over the years and hope to get down to see it one of these days. Al Ross ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From SceneN3D@aol.com Subject Re USS Ward USS Ward (DD-139) was in the then current Measure 21 (Navy Blue) system on all vertical surfaces, and Deck Blue on horizontal surfaces. bob bracci ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Ives100@aol.com Subject Re Wildwood, NJ patrol boat? >> Now this is interesting. I have no direct data on this, but I do have an "urban legend". For many years, my dad used to tell me tales of a WWII PT boat that was purchased after the war, and was used as a fishing/excursion boat in the Wildwood area. It may have been re-engined, as part of his tale was that the original supercharged engines cost too much to feed. This was a tale from his youth, so if it's the same boat, it's been in Wildwood for quite a while. David R. Wells P.S. If anyone says "Watch the tram car, please", I reserve the right to smack them with a wet rolled-up beach towel. ;-) << NOT an urban legend!! There were at least two WWII PT boats used during the late 1950's-early 1960's. We spent summers in Wildwood, and I remember both; they sailed out of Wildwood Crest. I cannot recall the name of one, but it had hokey plastic seahorses on it (and may have been called "the Seahorse"). The other was painted Pepto-Bismo Pink, and definitely went by the name of "The Pink Flamingo"! These were both tourist boats that went out several times each day, running up the Southern NJ coast about 300-600 feet off the beach. No fishing that I recall, just running tourists up & down the coast. The throaty roar of the diesels could be heard on the beach. Not sure about the re-engining part of the tale. All armament was stripped off, and bench chairs and railings installed. Wish I could remember the name of the second one.... No idea what eventually happened to them. And you HAD to bring up the ^$%*# trams!
