Looking for a 1/350. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From JFR1945@aol.com Subject Re High School math revisited >> Were that ir was so. John Wayne probably thought that when he took on the Yamoto with an 8" heavy cruiser in "In Harms Way" << While Jim's math is correct, the big lesson from WWII was that the key to winning ship against ship was to be the first to knock out the other guys fire control. It was almost impossible to protect precision optics and fire control radars against even 5" shells. Therefore, if John Wayne could have borrowed a Newport News with her auto loading 9x8", or even better a Worcester with her auto 12x6", he probably could probably turn Yamato into a floating junk pile. Not sink her though, without some tin cans using their torpedoes.... John Reeder ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "andy-vu" Subject Looking for books on IJN Nagato and Mutsu Hi Fellow-Smmlies! I'm looking for the Morskie monograph (#5 ???) on the Nagato/Mutsu, and the Gakken book on the same ships. Please contact me at andyvu33@hotmai.com Thank you very much, and Happy Modeling! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Daniel Kurtz Subject Renwal Kits OK, since everybody's talking about these old things, here's one I remember I had when I was a kid, though I'm not sure if it was Renwall or what. Angled-deck Essex-class, no larger than 1/700, probably smaller. The distinctive thing that I remember about it was that it had a little plug of a Mercury capsule that sat on the flight deck near the island. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Mike Settle Subject Model Ship Journal and Trident Hobbies To add further to the information I posted in SMML 2630 about the demise of Model Ship Journal and the letter I received from Trident Hobbies, the following options were offered. I quote from the letter >> 1. Credit for a one year subscription to our new magazine if you signed up for a 1 year subscription to MSJ. We'll honor 2 year subscription transfers for the full 2 year term as well. Remember, the new issue should be appearing in January 2005. 2. Store credit for your subscription price. If you signed up for a year at $45, you will receive a gift certificate for use through www.tridenthobbies.com or our new venture, www.masshobby.com (our new web portal for armor and aircraft models), should be up and running by 10/1/2004 for $45 to be used towards a model purchase; or 3. Cash refund of your unused subscription. If you signed up for a year at $45, you should have received one issue (Volume 5, Issue 1), so you would be due a refund of $33.75. If you would like to exercise option 1, do nothing and a subscription will be created for you. If you prefer option 2 or 3, you will need to contact me via email at cdecker@tridenthobbies.com or through our toll free phone number 866-590-6480 by October 31, 2004. After that date we will assume you wish a subscription to our new magazine. << END OF QUOTE FROM LETTER. Ladies and gentlemen, please don't shoot me, the messenger. Trident Hobbies just recently moved to Monroe, North Carolina. I live about 160 miles from Monroe, so I probably got my letter before most of you. I have never met Chris Decker and I have no connection with Trident Hobbies, but based on my mail order experience with them, they seem to be on the up and up. I believe Chris will eventually resolve the unfullfilled subscription issues. As for myself, I have not yet decided which option I am going to select. It is a shame to see another fine ship modeling magazine go out of business. Perhaps Chris Decker can resurrect MSJ under a new name with Victor Baca as editor. Christopher Decker is offering the following Refund in cash (of 75% - $33.75 of your subscription for 1 year subscribers) and I "assume" a similar amount for the 2 year subscribers. Next option is Store credit for the full 1 or 2 year amount. Last option is credit of either the 1 or 2 year amount towards a new publication getting off the ground in January 2005 with Victor Baca as the Editor. If you want anything other than a subscription to the new magazine, you need to contact Chris Decker at TriDent Hobbies at cdecker@tridenthobbies.com or phone toll free 800-590-6480 if you are in the USA. This must be done by October 31, 2004. Very sorry to hear this magazine go. I thought that it was very professional and just what I, as a 700th "steel navy" type of guy wanted. Got a little too much on the "non-navy stuff" for me, but basically enjoyed the magazine and looked forward to it each quarter. I thought that a quarterly would be very good because it would have to be articles that were "timeless" and not just rehashes of "whets new" that we can now get immediately from the internet. Sooooooooo, that's the story that I have. HTH Loren Pike IA USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Allan and Crystal Plumb" Subject Re Renwal Kits >> David Wells Wrote; >> I mean, 2x8" is 16", better than a mere 14" gun. Obviously.) << Were that ir was so. John Wayne probably thought that when he took on the Yamoto with an 8" heavy cruiser in "In Harms Way" << No, Allan Plumb wrote. I was speaking of my metrics for ship quality when I was 10, which was some time ago. Allan "I thought the -) was obvious" Plumb ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From George Colleen Hargreaves Subject Re IJN Takao 1938 from SMML 2614 Hi Steve, Janusz Skulski in his book on Takao has three drawings on the area you describe. On page 220 the aft superstructure is described as containing ventilator fans, toilet and stores. On page 221 there are two drawings, one from the front and one from the side. The structure you describe is not labelled. It appears as a flush rectangle with a rain hood on the top. This book is just great for Takao covering all eras of the ship. Cheers, George Hargreaves ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "Stephen Allen" Subject Trumpeter CV-8 to CV-5 Like Tim, I'd suggest that the Revell kit is a better base for a full hull build, but if you are going waterline or don't mind the hull too much then the Trumpeter kit would be ok. The Nautilus wooden deck and island conversion would be useful shortcuts for the CV-5 in 1/350. In addition to the Classic Warships pictorial I would highly recommend Cressman's 'That Gallant Ship', which has excellent quality photographs of the early career of Yorktown and these, in combination with the text, help to pinpoint important changes in appearance. There are also plans of CV-5 available from the Floating drydock. You should note especially that Yorktown's appearance in 1938 differed in detail from her appearance after a 1939 refit, which altered platform arrangements around and below the battle conn position in front of the pilot house, changed the location of the siren platforms on the funnel casing and also altered the access arrangements to the fighting top - before the refit the ladder rakes forward and has no hand rails and afterwards, it rakes aft witha handrail added. The rear section of the island sponson on the upper hull is also enclosed after the '39 refit. This is just from memory of sources used to build Yorktown in late 1940 fit. There is also a good sequence of 'as commissioned' photos of Yorktown in Friedman's 'US Aircraft Carriers A design history'. regards Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Mac Dale Subject Halifax Maritime Modellers Maritime Modellers Meet takes place this weekend at the Fleet Club in Halifax.
