Thanks Nuno Rubim ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Will Noble" Subject Post-Renaissance Warships >> A very good answer, and if you wish another reference you might cite The Royal ship Vasa. But one point... I believe you meant Henry VIII not Henry V. As Henry VIII was watching from Southsea CAstle as Mary rose went down. << Rich -- and the others who caught this -- I need to correct myself. It WAS Henry VII, and NOT Henry V who built (and witnessed the sinking) of the Mary Rose. Proof that I should either proofread my material before posting, or not post so early in the morning prior to at least ONE cup of coffee!!! Your comment about the Vasa is also telling -- all one has to do is LOOK at a model of Vasa, and it's pretty apparent that the vessel was not only top heavy (the sterncastle was too large for the hull), but the ship had too much canvas for anything but a flat, calm sea. As to the actual cause -- the Vasa is far better documented than the Mary Rose -- I'll wager that, regardless, it had nothing to do with flags or banners. Cheers! Will ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Richard Sweeney Subject Re Post-Renaissance era vessels I had a couple of other thoughts, If I remember correctly, The Kings ship Mary Rose (A great Carrack, therefore, a Medieval design.) had recently been rebuilt, during which her fore and Stern castles had been raised, giving her hull more sail area. Additionally, Her armament had been increased, and larger armamnet added, adding more weight to the upper levels of the hull. Would give more problems than the sail area of flags to make her unstable. Also an increase in Hull area and Armament would lower her gun ports relative to her old waterline. (Reported to be 16 inches above the waterline.) In her days her recorded weight raised over two tons and she was reported to be carrying 200 or more people than she was designed to carry. There is no question that flags can have some effect on stability, I just feel that with all of her other problems, The Flags on Mary Rose were the least of her problems. Rich Sweeney ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Tom Saundry Subject Many Thanks I would just like to thank evetone or the outstanding response on my Kate Camo question.
