I have a hi-res scan of a single frame from a film that was printed and is in the "loose" file at NHC. The date is October, 1941 with a TBD landing, the TBD's scheme and markings are consisitent with the date. Lex's deck is very blue, more aking to 20-B than to 250-N with solid yellow lines and yellow LEX clearly visible. There is some deck wear in the landing area where the original mahogany color shows through. If I get a chance later today I'll post a smaller image of it on www.shipcamouflage.com in the Color Controversy forum. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "John Snyder" Subject Re WW2 USN Paints and FS references (was Lexington in Blue) Hi Michael, Apologies for this shot across the bows, but you've just triggered a pet peeve of mine as regards equating the U.S. Navy's WW2 paint colors with Federal Standards (FS) references. In short, FS references have nothing at all to do with the USN's WW2 paints, except as approximations in someone's eyes. The U.S. Navy's WW2 (and prewar) paint colors were based on the 1929 Munsell Book of Color (one of which resides in my personal library). The FS system did not come into existence until after the war. No FS chip (got that in the library, too) matches any of the Navy's Munsell reference chips. The equating of USN WW2 paint colors to Federal Standards is largely the result of the continued, mistaken writings of Al Adcock in the Squadron "In Action" series of books. In spite of having the error pointed out time and time again, he continues to publish erroneous information. Best regards, John Snyder White Ensign Models http//WhiteEnsignModels.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Subject graphics software I believe this has been asked and answered before, but I don't recall the answers what would be the best, reasonably-priced, software for designing and printing custom decals onto decal paper with an ink-jet HP 16PSC 1600 printer? Doug Bauer Poway, CA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From M Brown Subject Royal Navy Destroyer and Frigate Squadrons/Flotillas Has anyone ever seen a list of which ships were in which RN squadrons and which ones were the leader or half leader? Ideally from the 1950s onward. Michael Brown ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From John SLATER Subject Re Italian heavy cruiser Pola G'day Marvin, I have only just started researching Italian Navy history over the last two years and am currently nearing completion of the light modern Italian Carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1/72scale. Regarding the antifouling colours of the hull of your Italian Heavy Cruiser, I have found that no matter what the era, the Italian's didn't seem to have a consistent bottom colour until pretty much the modern day. Red or Green is a pretty big contrast, and whilst it maybe probable that during a refit the hull bottom changed, it would only be if a MAJOR refit occurred that such a drastic re-paint may occur. I would think that most colour changes would occur (if any) to a ships upper works overtime. I have seen large scale Italian ship models of the Pola's era 1930's to 1940 at the Bologna Maritime Modellers Association and quite a few had green hull bottom colours. I'm not sure if this helps or merely adds to more speculation. Hope it helps Regards John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From CapnAgee@aol.com Subject Re LST Lee Upshaw's Scale Shipyard has a 1/96 LST. I'm building one myself. http//www.scaleshipyard.com/ Ray Agee ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Peter Chant" Subject Re RN Type 43 DDG Brown and Moore "Rebuilding the Royal Navy" has a section on the rise and fall of the Type 43, complete with artists impression and sketch drawing. Peter Plymouth ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Peter Chant" Subject RN deck colours, again I finally noticed that Peter Hodge's "Royal Navy Warship Camouflage" gives the deck colour for ships in the Western Approaches scheme (the white one) as B30. Now that is a nice light blue, but do not remember ever reading, or seeing on this list, any mention of Frigates and Corvettes with light blue decks. Was this something that was never actually carried out in practice, or was B30 one of those paints that actually became a grey during the war? Any ideas please. Peter Plymouth ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "Daniel Bauer" Subject Captured Flower Class Corvettes I am trying to do research on the four Flower Class Crovettes that the Germans captured in 1940 in France and later modified to use as coastal patrol craft. I have some info from the Flower Class Corvette Web-site and the three photos they have. Any other info, line drawings, info on actual paint schemes, or additional photos would be welcomed. Thanks in advance, Dan Bauer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "John Wressell" Subject Parts Sources Does anyone have any new sources for high quality parts such as blocks, stanchions, etc.? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
