Also 15 planks are as wide as a 20mm RSA, see bb-55-361. That's for main deck, 01 level planks are much narrower, see bb-55-216. Also check out bb-55-007, the two khaki uniformed guys walking under the port barrel of turret #1, the guy with rolled up sleeves and no hat has his right shoe almost straight across the plamks and the toe is at the plank edge, 2.5 his shoe is 2.5 planks long (to starboard there's a civilian wearing white bucks...funny what you notice when you look at small details). Or during her commissioing ceremonies foredeck planks are approx. the same width as the shoes of Frank Know (SecNav), Capt. Olaf Hustvedt and various other officers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From WRPRESSINC@aol.com Subject Re Ajax & York Refer to Raven and Roberts for fit and refit dates. The question to be answered is wether the AA gun fitted at the aft end of the quarterdeck in late 1940 /early 41 was Italian or British? Same question for the York. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From WRPRESSINC@aol.com Subject Re Ajax Quadruple pom pom fitted at Alexandria during repairs that took place from 12th of July 1941 to 15th of August 1941. One or possibly two, single AA guns fitted on quarterdeck at this time; Italian or British. Camouflage would have been either of two different types. See RN Camouflage in World War Two Volume One by Raven for details of both dazzle types worn in the 1941 time frame. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject US Coast Guard Commissioning Pennant Here's one for fans of the US Coast Guard. We know that all US Navy commissioned vessels at all times fly a long Commissioning Pennant from a pigstick attached to the highest mast. Is this true of Coast Guard vessels as well? Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From defiant@dslextreme.com Subject Age of Sail and other questions Good day, This maybe not quite so model related, but firstly wanted to say that I am astounded by the depth of knowledge that people have here. And when there is a lack of knowledge few here seem to rest on that! Anyway, have a few question for those who truly have plied the great oceans and seas. While building the Cutty Sark and reading into the larger-than-life Lord Nelson who seems to be almost unreal, I had another thought that combined my other interest of Astronomy, at sea in a dead calm at night with no clouds, how far down to the horizon would the stars go? In a dead calm the stars will reflect off th sky? And if the stars can reach down to the horizon (I am assuming no land mass in sight) then would the impression lead you to feel like you're in outer space? I can visualize it very well, just not sure how accurate the visualization is. Hope this makes sense! Onto the modeling question, how are Caldercraft kits? I like the look and sound of them and it would be nice to build something that wasn't plastic ). Many kind regards, Matt ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
