I have been out of the loop for a while, but has there been any word or further discussion of a 1/72 scale Fletcher class destroyer. I thought that I had heard that if there would be enough buyers that it could be a viable product? You most certainly can count me in that possibility Later! Danny R. Herron LTC, AVIATION USAR ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Gary Mansfield" Subject HMS RODNEY/NELSON Hi to the SMML Think Tank! I am trying to get photos/drawings/plans of either HMS Rodney or HMS Nelson under repair in Dry-dock during the war, for details of torpedo tubes, (used in the fight with Bismarck - only case of a Battleship torpedoing another)? Propellers, bilge keels. I am really keen on photos of HMS Rodney under repair in USA in May 1941 after her fight with Bismarck! I known she was damaged with her blast of the 16" guns both on and below decks. I know USN took photos of everything during the war... So any help out in USA SMML Land? I contacted the USN photo file office via e-mail but they suggested calling in person or the phone! Now lets see $ to £ per minute, middle of the night... Oh yes the wife will wear that!! "your office wants painting, a new floor and you want to go to the USA?..." Well, hope my lottery ticket comes up! Thank you to all the posts in reply to my questions about HMS Blake/Tiger in Command/Helicopter role, Sea Slug Missiles, County Class Destroyers still waiting for any posts ref USN Talos Guided Missile Cruisers... Over to USA SMML Land! Many thanks Gary Mansfield ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Robert Burgerhout Subject Re Revell Type 206A U-Boat Andrew, Maarten wrote >> Last thing to notice is the colour of these German subs when they are freshly painted the colour is medium to dark grey, with a slight greenish sheen. << The correct color for the German subs is RAL 8019 Graubraun (Greybrown). There is no FS equivalent, but FS20040 with a little more black or very dark grey will be very good. Revell gives a color mix in the description which also is correct. There is definitive no green in the colormix. Greetings, Robert ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Rick Nelson" Subject Re Scorpion I find the speculation regarding the Soviets "taking out" the Scorpion as retaliation for the loss of the K-129 very far fetched. The facts just don't support such a secnario. Furthermore, I doubt that the Soviet Navy would take such a chance. The possible escalation paths would be very dnagerious for them. Conspiricy theorist never rest! There are many more "real" situations that can sink a submarine and they occur constantly. I don't think the general public appreciates just how hazardious operating a submarine is and all of the various possibilites for loss. Only those who live on and operate submarines appreciate the fact that when a submarine is submerged it is actually in a state of being "sunk". If a problem occurs it is either fixed or the submarine remains perminatley "sunk". And problems are always occuring. At least that was my experience with boats built in the '50s and '60s. I'm about half-way through "Silent Steel" myself and really appreciated the comments the author made regarding John Livengston. I knew John very well. We met while attending the Navy's Electronics 'B' School at Great Lakes, IL in 1966. The author was correct when he stated that John was a quiet family man. He had three children and his wife was 8 months pregnant when the Scorpion was lost. John was a Rickover nuke and had served on the Nautilus before attending B school with me. He then went on to the Scoprion when we graduated in July '67. John was one of the finest guys I knew. Our families spent quite a bit of time together as we lived just down the street from each other. He and his wife stood in as proxies for us when our oldest daughter was baptised. As we used to say in the Navy, John was a 4.0 sailor. I really appreciated the picture of John in the book when the Scorpion hosted their party in Naples. Rick Nelson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From CokerRE@aol.com Subject NEWS REPORT FROM SHARKHUNTERS.COM About a year ago, we reported that the days were numbered for U-534. This is the U-Boat that was sunk by an RAF B-24 with Sharkhunters Member Neville Baker as navigator; found by Sharkhunters Member Aage Jensen and raised with our Sharkhunters Member Lars Sunn Pedersen in charge of the salvage effort. We reported in early 2005 that time was running out for this boat. Some of those at the warship memorial in Birkenhead, England (near Liverpool) hotly denied that there was any problem, but again we said that the boat's days were numbered and that the loud protestations to the contrary were merely damage control. About a month ago, we received firm and absolute confirmation that all the warships in that 'museum' had to be moved because the former warehouse area was being turned into housing apartments. No problem with the other warships as they were floating in the water and could easily be moved but poor U-534 was settled into concrete bunkers ashore and that is where the parking lot is going to be and without a German U-Boat in it! It will not be so easy to move the boat and it sure won't be cheap, so the future is looking bleak for U-534. We have been in contact with the owner of the boat, hoping to save her from being broken up on the site. So far, the owner says that a few others are also interested in the boat and we hope that someone - ANYONE - will take proper care of this boat. If there is no deal in place and very quickly, this submarine will be broken up and sold for scrap and that would be a very sad thing. We will keep you informed as new developments take place, but as of this moment, the first of February 2006 is the end of any visitors being able to go to U-534. We assume that the area will then be overrun with construction workers, turning the warehouses into housing apartments (flats) and very quickly thereafter, the work will begin on the parking lot and U-534 will have to go, one way or another. Also Seaphoto has pictures of the USS Laffey DD724 Joseph Wojcik ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Iscandar66@aol.com Subject USS Oriskany Has there been any drawings/plans published showing what the USS Oriskany (CV-34) may have looked like had she been modernized in the 80's? Thanks in advance, Derek "Deke" Wakefield W6WAV ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Gregory Turek" Subject revell type VIIC sub As some talk of subs lately, thought I'd mention my latest project, Revell typeVIIC U-Boat 172 scale. The challenge is to make it operate in pond/pool. Have previously posted my efforts in R/C plastic ships(QM2, Titanic, etc) . Many difficulties including waterproofing, buoyancy mech and fitting r/c gear into long narrow hull. Plan to use graupner pump for flooding an internal chamber(plastic pipe) and 1 channel for speed control, 1 for pump, 1 for rudder and 1 for bow planes. Lots of experimentation and trial and error. If anyones interested or doing similar, let me know. greg turek ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
