Several ships were recalled from Arctic Convoy operations
in 1944 to take part in regular sweeps of the channel prior to D-Day.
Here in glorious spring sunshine HMS Diadem (Modified Dido Class), HMCS
Haida and HMCS Huron engage in one such patrol.
Diadem is a modified Skytrex Black Prince model whilst the Tribals are Ultracast kits. 1:700 scale |

Convoy JW 58 sailed from Loch Ewe 27/3/44 with
two escort carriers, one of which was Tracker. Among the close escort
for the convoy were the corvettes Bluebell, Honeysuckle and Lotus
and the newly completed escort carrier HMS Tracker. Opposition to
the convoy was intense, and defense was equally agressive: U288 was
sighted and attacked by a "stringbag" from Activity, a shout
on the radio brought in an Avenger and Wildcat from Tracker and they
all sank it together. The diorama features the morning of that patrol
with the Avengers and Wildcats warming up on deck. The corvettes are White Ensign Models (Bluebell and
Buttercup) models, Tracker is converted from a Skywave Bogue and the
Liberty ship from Tom's Modelworks. 1:700 scale.

Research shows that it is just possible for these two
grand old ladies to be together, albeit briefly, during the Normandy
bombardment following D-Day. The most likely date was the June 7th when
Warspite had to retire in order to replace her guns and Rodney was offshore
sending salvo upon salvo up to 17 miles inland. Rodney is depicted firing
salvos and Warspite slipping past on her way back to Portsmouth for
her main armament to be replaced with her attendant tug laying off.
As both ships were in their late war fit a degree of scratch building
had to be done to get them looking 'right'.
Rodney is a Tamiya kit whilst Warspite is from White Ensign Models. Both were detailed using WEM etch brass. 1:700 scale. A detailed article describing the construction of this diorama can be found on the WEM website(see links page). Similarly, for more pictures and information see: Plastic Ship Modeller no.22 |
