The North Central Texas chapter of IPMS/USA has been entering the Group category at the IPMS Nationals for many years. This is entry is our second first-place win in a row. This is the first time we have attempted a ship themed project. I must admit that it is all my fault. Last year when we were discussing potential themes for the 2002 project I made the mistake of speaking up and saying that 2002 was the Centennial of the US Navy Destroyer.
My idea was accepted by acclaimation and I was named the project
coordinator. I have since learned to sit on my hands during meetings.
I put together a spreadsheet of US destroyer classes from the past century. It was an ambitious plan with fifty models. I gave the club membership a chance to volunteer to build specific kits. Some of the models came from personal display shelves, most were built specifically for the project. There were some fairly healthy purchases of plans from the Maryland Silver Company to cover the early destroyers that didn't have kits and would have to be scratchbuilt. I had 35 models in the display. I was satisfied with the display and by winning the first-place award I feel that we were successful. There were some holes in the display -- well, some people ran out of time.
Several of the models have won individual prizes. Mike Johnston's Box-launcher Spruance was the best ship at this spring's show in San Antonio, TX.
